    DV6-2003eo random power off

    Hi,

I'm happy to be new here. I have a HP DV6-2003eo laptop that has some kind of intermittent power failure. Most of the time the computer starts (fan on, LEDs on) and then shutdown after a couple of seconds and sometimes it starts just fine to later shutdown and again fail to power on.

The same thing happens when running from DC-power, battery or dock.

I've have monitored the CPU/GPU temp to make sure that I'm not tripping any thermal shutdown. eg. temperatures looks good.

I have checked most of the N-channel mosfets and electrolytic caps. ("On the N-Channel FET place the NEG lead on Pin 6/7 and the POS lead on Pin 2/3. You should get a reading of some value ~100 to 500 or higher.")

I don't know where to start my diagnostic - since the problem is occurring randomly. What could be the most likely cause?

I doubt that a reflow will help since I do get picture and the computer stays on (once it decides not to turn off before POST) enough time to do a video/cpu benchmark. Plus, this is a newer dv6 model, hopefully not suffering from the previous BGA defects.

Pictures of what? The entire motherboard?

I fixed DV6 2106eo with same type fail.

There was condensator shorted on 1.1V output.

Can an capacitor that measures 8.9 ohm be considered shorted?

I think if measure first +- and turn over -+ it should be very high resistance.

It depends if or what other components are paralelly connected with it on the board.
                Laptops and computers repair.

Voltages which go CPU or GPU have very low resistace.

You can take CPU OFF and measure resistace to CPU coil.

GPU voltages remove capasitors and measure then capasitors.
