tried the wire mod, no change. my only guess would be a bad usb plug... not sure idf my equip can desolder those or not... I will have to try on the dead board.

found the issue. the lead on the 5v line was broken (fatigue crack). I was able to fix it by soldering a little wire (22 awg) from the good part of the lead (back of usb port is exposed thank god) to a smd trace on the port's 5v plane. the trace was a larger one for a large tant.

I'd post pics but she's already closed up... i am glad to have the port working again.
