dell latitude 110L power adater issue

hey every, I have a aftermarket power adapter for this laptop and the part that plugs into the laptop when plugged it has to be pushed a certain way for it to power the laptop and if you let go it wont power it, I replace the power jack on the motherboard but that didnt fix it, is there anyway to fix this?

also the brick for the power cord makes like static sounds or like theres a short but I cant get it open to figure it out, how do I go about this aswell?

thanks in advance for any help/advice

Because of the static sound from the brick, it sounds like there's either something loose inside or it's starting to short out. I would stop using it. As for the tip, did you compare it to the old one? Sounds like there's a poor/loose fit somewhere. Was the poor connection the original problem with the first adapter? Easiest way of troubleshooting is to try and borrow a working adapter and see what happens. Aftermarket market adapters are usually poorly made and sometimes buying a used OEM adapter is a better option.

the tip of the old oem one did the same thing which is why I replaced it. I do not have access to another one to see what happens

        Use the OEM one.
Aftermarket ones often lack cool features like overload protection.

What brand is the aftermarket power adapter? Also, is there a UL number (it usually starts with "E" followed by 6 numbers after that)? Post some pics of the label, if possible. Most aftermarket power adapters can indeed be of very poor quality. Some are plain fire hazards.

Did you replace it with a new one? Did you solder it down properly? If the laptop works only when the power adapter plug is held in a certain way, then definitely check and recheck your solder joints on the laptop's power jack. Also check all traces on the laptop's motherboard that lead from the jack to the rest of the board.

I suppose that one is okay, being a Rayovac. At least it's not one of those no-name ones that overheat/smoke/blow up.

Do you have another laptop that you can plug it into and check if it does the same thing?

As for the buzzing, it could be normal, but it might also not be. Was the adapter doing this before (i.e. when it was new) or did it just randomly start buzzing one day?

the new adapter just started doing the buzzing sound one day and I dont know why.

also I have a 800 dollar laptop that I got back in February that now has a busted screen and I tried the power adapter and it works with the laptop in question but I have to bend it a little bit to get it to work aswell, I will tear down the laptop later today and get some pictures of the power jack area

Okay, then that suggests that perhaps one of the wires inside the power adapter cord is damaged near the jack. Either that, or the power adapter's connector has gotten loose somehow.

Does the power adapter buzz when it's plugged in the wall but not connected to the laptop? Also, when you plug the power adapter in the laptop and bend the wire so that it's working properly, does the buzzing stop?

I'm still trying to determine if it's a bad cord or loose output cord connector. Can you post a picture or two of the connector as well?

Well, this might be unnecessary now, seeing that the problem is pointing to the power adapter. Sorry if I made you go through a lot of trouble. If you have the pictures, though, feel free to post them anyways.

yes the buzzing happens when it is just plugged into the wall and no the buzzing does not stop when plugged into the laptop, also I have to hold it to keep it going or else the laptop will loose power.

I have not yet taken the laptop apart but im going to do so any way to get some pictures cause I might be missing something that yall might see

Re: dell latitude 110L power adater issue

I couldnt edit my post so I had to make a new one

I took the laptop apart to try and get pictures which I couldnt cause I couldnt get focused good, but while I was trying I noticed a solder joint on the power jack that I missed so I plugged in my soldering iron and got to work after I was done I put everything back together and plugged it in and ran into a couple of new issues.

first one is that the rayovac still has problems but now when I plug in the laptop it comes on without me pressing the power button.

second problem is that now the power button no longer works, I am thinking of taking the laptop apart again and undoing that solder joint to see if that fixes the power button issue.

if anyone has a dell latitude 110L or a inspiron 2200 and dont mind taking it apart and getting some clear pictures of the solder joints for the power jack on the motherboard that could help me a bit
