Acer aspire 3000 broken power jack

I was working on getting a new power jack on my laptop no problem. When I got to soldering my pins and finished my ac power cord makes a whinning noise like the positive and negative are touch. I bought some solder remover at radio shack. The pics show how much I was able to take off. I also tried grounding to one of the screws on the board and still makes the sound. Will I need a new board or is the still fixable?

    Thank you.

You have a solder bridge across PC79. The bottom little cap.

Wow, it looks pretty bad! These circuit boards are multi-layered, which means there are copper traces running between the layers. You may have shorted it out while trying to pull the old socket out. One way to check for shorts is with your Digital Multi Meter (DMM). Set the meter to resistance. Touch red probe to the positive pad on the circuit board and the black probe to the negative (ground) pad. If it shows less than 0.5 ohms, you have a short. If it is shorted, you will probably have to buy another board.

Yes, it looks well butchered, but fix the -obvious- problem and see.

Sorry Toasty, but I didn't see your earlier post (guess I was too shocked by the photo!). Yes, definately fix that solder bridge first before going on.

to the OP, I just learned that not everyone here has the right tools sometimes. This board looks like you had to rock the DC jack out. Perhaps your iron doesn't have enough heat? This part and the PCB it attaches to are pretty good heatsinks.....make sure you've got an iron that gets hot enough. Just sayin'.....

Thanks for the input. I was focusing to much on the jack. I replace the little cap 79 and turned right on. i was able to but a soldering gun. station for 30 bucks. Which works better then the 7.00 soldering iron from fred meyer. lol

Ok so now I got the thing to turn on. Now I am at the login page. How can I bypass the administrator password. I've tried contol+alt+delete and it still asks for passwork even when left blank. Safe mode doesnt work either.

?? What happened between the 2 posts? It was working now it's not? You might have a loose cable connection.

You're not following the instructions on that program. Step by step and there is a guide out there too for it.

the computer is fine. In the website for the file it state on FAQ that when you install cd it can make mouse and keyboard not work. It also states that there is no fix for it.

When I downloaded the file into my working computer I unzipped the file and then burned onto a disc then set the bios to load cd rom firs then hdd. It should load it up from there correct. However it doesn't load the disk.

I can still control mouse sensor and key board unitll I get to the log on screen. That when it all freezes. I can still get to the f2 menu and control all of those things. If this doesn't workd is there anyway to just do a system restore without the recovery discs. I know on my dell you push ctrl and f10 I think and it gives you the restore menu

Well, you have a CD? I'd just reinstall the whole thing. Take out the drive, put it in your desktop computer (buy an adapter if it's IDE, if it's SATA it'll work without one), back up all data, then reinstall Windows.

Hello I re-read instructions and figured out the right way to copy iso. I can now access the administrator file. Thank you for your help and patience. I plan on giving this to my mother in-law. Is there any way of restoring this Acer Aspire 3000 to original settings? With out any discs. I know on my dell it's f11 or something like that.

By "original settings" do you mean the BIOS default settings or a complete reinstall of Windows. It may be accessible via a boot option, such as the Dell, or it may be in the BIOS setup screen(s). It would need to have the "hidden" partition on the hard drive to work.

Check the Acer website on this model. Instructions and support should be there. User manuals are generally available.
