    2018 Macbook Pro A1990 2Tb, SSD1 dead

    Hello All,

My 2018 Macbook Pro (2TB) crapped out recently, won't turn on. Diagnosed so far as shorted second terabyte SSD1. Question for the forum. I'm thinking about removing or disabling SSD1 and just using SSD0 which will still give me 1Tb usable. I'm assuming all the boot up stuff is all in SSD0. Am I correct about this? If so is there a way to disable SSD1 without removing all the associated components? Will just powering it down do the trick?

I currently have U9580 (TPS62180) removed as it was fried but that is as far as I have gone with it. In other words I haven't identified the short yet so I suppose it could still be a capacitor but guessing I won't get that lucky.

Any info or advice on how I should proceed is appreciated. I do have schematics and board file, and I am a computer engineer so can understand the circuits. I just don't have much experience with this system.

Check the resistance to ground of each inductor. Each inductor is linked to a local switching buck regulator.

If the resistance is too low, the shorted cap may be on that power rail.

Remove all power during the resistance checking.

I don't believe it is possible to do that, as they are all striped with firmware as a set of 8 by Apple. Not to mention Apple has these all underfilled making a simple process a PITA.

Watch this video on how hard Apple has made what is a simple replacement in a PC to a nightmare on a MAC. Built in obsolescence as the SSD will ultimately wear out and die, and the whole machine is thus useless.

Thanks for the replies guys. reformatt, I had watched that video and to me it looks like the two SSD's are striped separately with the nands labeled 0-3 on each one. Not a fan at all of Apple design techniques. I won't be buying another one. But I may test the theory that it's possible that the two SSD's are striped separately and will report back.

          MacBook Pro 2018 - A1990 Dead - not charging - only 5V
          by robka
          Hi,

          my MacBook Pro 15" 2018 Touch Bar (A1990) doesn't charge anymore. Board# 820-01041-A

I'm not experienced in diagnostics, but I want to try to solve the problem with your help, because every local shop charges around 600€ (650 usd). Which is the value of the whole Macbook.

The Macbook was charging when suddenly the "charging sound" appeared every other second for around 4-5 times.
After that the Macbook was dead. It isn't charging anymore.

The USB-C Port where the charger was plugged is burned. Also The Cable and the...

          Dead 2018 Macbook Pro A1990 820-01041-07 stuck at 5V 0A

First time looking at a logic board this closely, learnt enough from videos and forums here to be dangerous

I was doing a OS update when the screen went blank at some point. Does not seem to be in DFU mode (checked using apple configurator).

          PPDCIN_G3H is 5.16V

          PPBUS_G3H is 0.045V

Resistance between TP_PPBUS_G3H and ground is 23.8 Ohms (which seems low)

          F7000 and F7001 seems fine.

From what I learnt seems like there might be short on the down side on PPBUS_G3H.

Is injecting low voltage and see what...

I found macbook pro from a relation and its dead. I'm thinking to learn from this stuff. Still I didn't even tested the voltages. when I plug power I see one NAND chip heats up. I guess Its about SSD failure. Can you guys help me in this matter. what should I do?

I heard I can't replace only one chip. Is that true? where should I start? this is the first time I'm dealing with macbook.

          U8800 chip heats up

was able to find both brd file and schematics from this forum. here is the link to that.

Hi, I found short on one of 6 black nand (total 1TB).
i removed all 6 nand ( voltages all ok) and now i want to program with JC P15 but for A1990 2019 there is only 512GB configuration.
I try A2141 1TB configurazion with TSB4228 but the position on pcb is different ( U9300 and U9400 is no stuff on A1990 but present on A2141 and U8800 and U8900 is no stuff on A2141 but present on A1990 )
macbook with A2141 configuration run on recovery but don't complete it.
          anyone can help me?
