A1989 Macbook Pro unable to reinstall macOS after DFU recovery

    Hello guys,

I've been learning about computer repairs and got a MacBook Pro A1989 that had some liquid damage. After thorough cleaning, the board was getting 20V and 1A+ when the battery was connected but the laptop still wasn't booting. The symptoms were similar to another thread I found here (https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...hlight=20V+amp) so I followed the advice of entering DFU mode and was able to recover the firmware and it is now booting (the revive option was giving me an error, so I had to erase everything).

However, I've been unable to install macOS on it. I tried internet recovery but get a message "Security Settings do not allow this Mac to use an external startup disk" after it reboots. Reinstalling macOS from the macOS utilities gives me an error saying "the recovery server could not be contacted".

Sorry in advance for being a noob, but I'm still learning. Hopefully someone in here can help me fix this issue.

are you able to get into recovery? if yes go to disk manager and see if it is able to detect the internal HDD

if you have issues getting into recovery due to internet issues, suggest using a usb c to ethernet dongle and try

I don't understand why, but when I press cmd+R it goes into internet recovery and no drives are listed.

I was able to enter the startup manager by pressing the option key and then went into disk utility. There, I saw that the main SSD was not initiated, but after erasing it, I was able to initiate it. Still, the same problem persists when trying to use internet recovery, I get a message saying "Security Settings do not allow this Mac to use an external startup disk" after it reboots.

I finally got it to work by restoring from an external HDD with Time Machine. Thanks for the help.

A1989 EMC3214 can't boot to USB drives due to T2 but SSD can't be initialized and Macbook freezes then reboots in recovery
          by MullySculder
Hey folks, I'm working a 2018 13" Macbook Pro that I can't get to install an OS on.

This was given to me by a friend who told me I could have it, if I fixed it.

I've noticed a couple of dents on the laptop case and the touch bar doesn't have any activity lights when first turning on. When I boot up the machine, it gives a folder with a question mark. When I do eventually get to internet recovery with High Sierra, I can go to Disk Utility but I'll get errors when I try to erase the 512GB SSD. First Aid comes back with no issues. But if you linger too long on anything,...

Macbook Air 2020 A2179 Internet Recovery and Battery Issues
          by cheebster
Hello, i have a batch of 10 Macbook Pros A2179 bought from a Costco return wholesaler.

          The 10 of them show the exact same behavior;

They auto power on, to internet recovery spinning globe, fans to 100%.

Power consumption on USB-C port is 0.43a, shuts down as soon as unplugged. Battery doesn't charge at all. However, it boots to 20V on the Ampmeter.

Based on their iBridge versions (4.x and 5.x) these were shelfed for a long time.

All of them power on the same way; 100% fans, shut down as soon as they are unplugged. Removing...

MacBook Pro A1989 820-00850-A not powering on
          by ErinV
          Hey everyone!

I have a MacBook Pro A1989 with a 820-00850-A board that recently stopped working. I used it overnight to charge my phone, in the morning it didn't turn on, I assumed flat battery but now won't charge and doesn't start at all.

I have fully dissassembled it, when disconnected the battery reads at 0.012V. Even with the battery disconnected the laptop doesn't boot.

The diode voltages around all 4 CD3215's seem fine.

          For all CD3215 (UB300, UB400, U3100 and U3200) I read just above 5V on PP20V_USBC_TA_VBUS, 3.3V on PP3V3UPC_TA_LDO, 1.8V...

Macbook air m1 can't access the recovery options by pressing and holding the power button
          by conghuyms
I have an M1 MacBook Air (A2337) 2020 that came in for water damage and will not turn on. Upon opening it, I saw that the audio board was severely corroded. I disconnected it, and the device started working.

After that, I dealt with the issues on the audio board by removing the capacitors that were shorted to ground, and the device started working. However, I encountered another problem: I can't access the recovery options by pressing and holding the power button. I'm not sure if it's a hardware issue or if the recovery partition has been lost. Currently, the system's time isn't updating,...

Macbook Pro A1989 - No image, working fine with external monitor
          by Madoy104
          Hi everyone,

I have a MacBook Pro A1989 that was likely exposed to liquid. It doesn't display an image on the built-in screen, but the screen is backlit (you can't see the Apple logo or any other elements when held up to light). The laptop provides 20V and 1.5-2A, and it works fine when I use it with an external monitor. Currently, the connector for the display (J8500) is disconnected. I'm writing to ask for help in diagnosing the issue. I've heard that when the J8500 is exposed to liquid, the processor pin responsible for the display might short-circuit, and I'd like to know...
