    Via P4pa-ul

    I have here a VIA P4PA-UL motherboard that had failed GSC capacitors. My father found it in the trash at his work a while ago, I didn't have the time to try repairing it until now. The failed capacitors were three GSC LE series 1500uf 16V caps and four GSC LE series 3300uf 6.3V caps. This motherboard physically looks good, none of the traces underneath it are damaged and there are no burnt or physically damaged components anywhere on it.

    It appeared that someone salvaged all of the GSC 330uf 25V caps on the board, since they were all missing when my father took it out of his work's trash.

    So far I have replaced some of the GSC caps with suitable replacements that I already have:

    GSC LE series 1500uf 6.3v and 1000uf 6.3V -> Nichicon HE series 1000uf 6.3V
    GSC LE series 1500uf 16V -> Panasonic FC series 1000uf 16V

    I have ordered replacement caps for the 3300uf 6.3V caps (Nichicon HE series 2700uf 6.3V 10x31.5mm) and 330uf 25V caps (United Chemicon LXY series 330uf 25V 10x16mm).

    Here are some pictures of this motherboard:

    If I can successfully repair this motherboard and make it work, then it'll be the perfect motherboard for my Celeron 2.2GHz computer.

    Here is the complete list of capacitors I will be using on this motherboard:

    GSC LE series 1500uf 6.3v and 1000uf 6.3V -> Nichicon HE series 1000uf 6.3V
    GSC LE series 1500uf 16V -> Panasonic FC series 1000uf 16V
    GSC LE series 3300uf 6.3V -> Nichicon HE series 2700uf 6.3V
    GSC RE series 330uf 25V -> United Chemi-con LXY series 330uf 25V

    Can anyone comment on if the capacitors I chose to use are good replacements?

      Pull the heatsink off the chipset, you might find double sided tape (not thermal type).

        The choices seem good.

        Panasonic FM has better specs than Panasonic FC and is priced similarly.

        I am not sure that 25V capacitors are required on motherboards, possibly 16V capacitors will suffice or maybe even 10V. To check you would have to measure the voltage across the existing capacitor on the motherboard.
        You probably have a reason to use 25V capacitors thou.

          Exactly, I have a socket 478 Gigabyte board which was littered with 330uF 25V Choyo caps, if I recall correct none of the spots had more than 12V across them.

            I recapped this motherboard with the capacitors I mentioned and so far it's great. It's stable and fast.

            Memtest86+ for 2 hours on a standard test went out perfectly fine. In fact, I'm typing on the system with this motherboard right now.

              Capacitor Diarrhea - Nichicon PL Series
              by DrewPhillips
              Hello All, I have on the bench a couple of PSU's which have some failed Nichicon PL series caps. They didn't "puke" their guts through the top, but instead "diarrhea'ed" corrosive brown electrolyte through the bottom, down the legs and onto the board. On one cap, the electrolyte rotted the cap right off the board leaving 2 little stubs, and also corroded a trace on the foil side.

              The PSU's are Power-One MAP series and are ringing-choke topology. The semiconductors have date codes in 1993. The PSU's were used in a commercial application, fan-cooled. They had failed...

              A few days ago,I destroyed one of my japanese retro game console by pluging it to 220v outlet.
              https://www.badcaps.net/forum/troubl...e-been-blew-up

              and I finally fixed this retro game console by soldering varistor and glass fuse.

              But I noticed that When I measure voltage of PSU's 5pin connector, it is 8.80-9.07v, 5.13v,3.40-3.48v,GND,GND instead of its rated voltage of 9v 5v 3v GND GND.
              I have spare console...
