Apple - iMac G5

A growing number of owners of the new Apple iMac G5 are reporting various kinds of hardware problems - logic board failures, video problems, power supply problems.

My own iMac initially developed intermittent video troubles, but within 2 days had become unusable. I am scheduled to have my mainboard replaced next week.

glad i didnt buy a canon 300d those pictures are way below what i would have expected.

iMac G5 update

I received a new "midplane" assembly from Apple yesterday to replace the old one.

There were 6 visibly bad capacitors on my board - every one was a Nichicon 6.3 V 1800 uF (there are 20 of these total).

My new board has the same Nichicons. Hopefully, the problem won't resurface.

I wouldn't blame Apple for that, they went for Nichicons not some cheapo Taiwan caps and no one knew they were having problems too. Yeah they could have gotten Rubycon or something but hindsight is always 20/20.

I've got one of these and I'm seriously thinking of re-capping it. I'll void my warranty, but I think it may be worth it.

What do you guys think of doing a pre-emptive re-capping?
