generic nvidia card with captop (craptop)caps.

    went to polymers.
yep its a waste on this thing.just playing around with it .
belongs in a friends server so we will see how it does longterm.

Did you keep the same uF rating when you installed the polymers?

Also, I noted one old cap still in place.... ?

Nice! I wish I had polymers to throw around like that.

      @bgavin
The "old" cap looks like a Rubycon MBZ to me.
Also, IIRC polymers with 1/2 the capacitance value can be used in place of certain aluminum electrolytics.

Re: generic nvidia card with captop (craptop)caps.

the lytic is on +5 and is a new rubycon mbz
        the 560@4 are on +3.3
        the 820@2.5 are on 1.5-2.5 v
remember you can use a polymer 1/2 the uf rating as esr is much lower which is the most important.

What is the down side of replacing a 330uF lytic with a 330uF polymer?

According to the above rule, this is essentially doubling the capacitance rating, and jumping up to a 660uF lytica equivalent. Bad news?

I haven't had a 'scope since I left IBM in '93. Back then, my friend was a company-issue Tektronix 454. Good enough for what I needed.

It works better for me to ask questions of you guys who have scope lives. I already have computer, music, and speaker building lives... no more time for any more lives.

Can one count on the quality of Sanyo OS-CON polymer caps?

BGAVIN I guess you were joking!!! and already know a 330uf polymer in place of a 330uF wet electro is likely to reduce ESR by two or more and capacitance is naturally the same. A great substitution.

There are lower end polymers out now that have worse ESR than the better lytics.

No sir, no joking from me at this point in my education.

I read everything posted by the gurus here, and learn from it. Hence, the apparent humorous (read: stupid) questions. I learn by immersion, which is why I assemble huge spread sheets that contain knowledge. Repetition and immersion pound it into my head.

I finished entering the Sanyo SP polymer series in my sheet. I compared the 180uF/10v ESR to the Rubycon ZL. Huge difference in ESR and leakage current. Probably a huge difference price, too.

Polymers usually cost anywhere from 2x to 6x what lytics do.

But then, on a critical system you are going to leave together for a long while they may be worth it for reliability and longevity. They have actually been using them on better server boards for quite a long time. I have a pair of 1998/1999-ish Intel 440BX based dual P2 server boards that are 100% OSCON.
(Those boards retailed for $899 back in the day. Just the board.)

                            Hello to the forum.

My name is Christos, I am new to the forum here and i am posting from Greece.

So i have this old German sound card from Marian, called Trace Alpha. To be exact i have 2 of them and i use them professionally for my small FM radio station here. The first one works like a charm, but the second one does not work at all.

To be more specific in the same exact pc with windows 7 (i even tried 32bit) the one works while the other doesn't.

So i tried asking for a schematic from the company and they would not give me one. Instead they...
