Help with caps MS-6309

Hi. Great forum here. Going to turf the board and ran across info that lead to this site.

Have a couple of questions regarding replacement caps. I have completed the inventory of caps on the board and have 5 different manufacturers. The CHHSI 2700 uf and G-LUXON 2700uf caps are the culprits. From reading here, I understand some people are using different values for replacing these caps - some 2700uf, some 2200uf, some replacing with 3300uf.

I am attaching a pic in which I have identified the 3 leaking caps with a red mark on top. Here are the current values of the caps that I have numbered.

1. CHHSI 2700uf, 6.3V (blown)
2. CHHSI 2700uf, 6.3V (blown)
3. Rubycon 2200uf, 6.3V, MBZ
4. Rubycon 2200uf, 6.3V, MBZ
5. Empty spot - no cap there
6. G-LUXON 2700uf, 6.3V,LZ, 1073(M) (blown)
7. Rubycon 2200uf, 6.3V, MBZ

I realize I need to replace all caps 1000uf and over. I plan on using panasonic caps (FC type, low impedance) and ordering them from Digikey (Canada).

What values should I use for these 6 caps and should I also add a cap to spot 5 which has no cap in it. Sorry from the crappy pic. Numbering is left to right (1-7).

You will not need to replacethe Rubycon MBZ caps. Replace Luxon and CHHSI. Looking at the photo it would seem that the replacements should be the same Rubycon MBZ type.

It depends where you are. If in the USA Topcat, the forum owner can supply replacements for you. Send a PM

If outside the USA Big Pope, found in this forum, can supply Samxon GC caps by air mail. If using GC I suggest that all six be replaced with 2200u 6.3V. Send a PM.

If you have any other Luxon or CHHSI caps at 1000u or more replace those.

Improving on my last post.

If you have the green LED lit on the motherboard that means the 5 volt standby is present. This is used to start the power supply locally and by remote.

If the fans are not running this is an indication that the power supply has not started, eg not delivering 12 volts to the fans and all the other main power voltages. If the power supply fan is working then the power supply is ON and the motherboard fans should be operating. Check the CPU fan is plugged into the right header.
If the power supply is not working, check to make sure the front panel switch is connected to the correct two pins of the front panel header on the motherboard, the wire colours are blue and white normally.
If the button is correctly connected then there is a problem with the motherboard or power supply. To find out which . Disconnect all the power supply connectors from the motherboard. With the power supply disconnected from any power insert a short circuit link into the green and any black wire sockets of the power supply main output connector. With green and black connected together turn on the the power to the supply. The fan should start and it is now possible to check voltages with a multimeter. With one probe on black, the Red wires should have 5 volts , the yellow 12 volts and the orange 3.3Volts. If this checks Ok but nothing happens when plugged into the motherboard as already seen, the motherboard is at fault.

See how you go. Let us know.

OK, np.

The system is running, but get the freeze screen after a few minutes and ctrl alt del won't work to restart. Have re-installed win98, and problem is still there. Both fans running and all the dust bunnies are gone.

Ordered some new caps and should be here Tuesday. Will update then.

I have a MS-5169 (Super 7) that has the same crap Chssi caps. I had retired it a couple of years ago thinking it was the K6-2/550 that was overheating (even after lapping the CPU & heatsink and using Arctic silver). It would run long enough to get an OS on it but inevitably would lock up within an hour of running.

Just recapped it (now that I know better) with a mix of Rubies & Saxmon and now it's stable. It's run BOINC for a few days now without a hiccup (just as a stress test). Seems MSI used very crappy caps for all their products of this era.

Replaced the 3 bad caps with 2200uf ones as per davmax.

System working great! Can't get it to lockup or crash.

OK, I will change this 3 caps too and hope, that this solve the problem.
