    VP6 and Teapo caps

So...has it been decided that Teapo is bad?

I ask because both of my VP6s are Abit refurbs and the one has Teapo caps. It seems a bit sluggish. Windows Explorer takes a while to open after a reboot. It seems like when I run some utility programs for the first time, they take an unusually long time to load. I'm running Win2k on this one. It also takes forever to shut it down....properly.

I took a look at the caps. No physical indicators. Kind of tempted to just replace the Teapos.

    Suggestions?

ctrl alt del to get task manager and check the processes in idle to see what is eating up all the cpu, prolly svchost.exe then it is virii.

      run adaware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
clean out all the crap, make sure you identify and understand what you are deleting. if it finds some nasties, keep notes also for further investigation of the problem on the net. if you get adware may need some investigation to clean up all the remnants manually.

      empty your browser cache

reboot, open internet explorer, close it and run adaware again to see if you have something persistent that needs more agressive attention if it is now clean then you are ok otherwise you will need something like hijackthis and cwshredder or some manual editing.

      scan for viruses

check your registry with regedit and see what is in
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run

do some research on the programs loaded with that registry entry see if anything is there that should not be. dont remove anything unless you understand exactly what it is. also maybe adaware will have deleted a nasty entry here already.

check win.ini and system.ini to see if there is any nasty entries there to load spyware programs.

check your event viewer to see if there is any problems there that are unrelated to virii.

please post any instances of sextracker or other xxx cookie for our records.

once you are done check what you need to patch to stop it happening again. win2k requires some winupdate to be secure even with firewall. jscript, virtual machine patches, rpc exploit patches. i am running sp4 in the office without problems so maybe consider that.

the caps have to go i think it is just a timebomb.

oo hey...I forgot about all the spyware and temp file crap. I must be getting old. :o Hmmm...might have to try it out. I just installed Norton on it. No viruses though.

I'll get on that. I'll post results later.......

Yep, slowness is usually caused by a software problem, unless disk errors are occuring. Are there any disk errors or atapi errors in the system event log?
