    Good Tayeh caps?

    Hello Everyone,

I have a 500MHz Pentium III computer with an Abit BE6 motherboard that has been in use for about 7-8 years (it was bought in 1999/2000) today i opened up this PC to check how the caps were doing (I knew they were Tayeh for a long time) and they were all still fine?!. None of the caps were bulging or leaking from the bottom and also i can't smell anything bad from the board.

Most large capacity Tayeh caps are found around the processor and are 8mm 1500uf 6.3V.
Why arent these caps failing? they are Tayeh arent they? I think most Tayeh will show physical signs unlike Teapo caps, which do not show any physical signs and dry up silently inside the can.

This computer doesnt have any ventilation whatsoever probably because i can't be bothered installing any exhaust fans and also the fact that it is a desktop case.
The computer has acted as my server for a long while ( though it is hardly on).... i bought the board and CPU earlier in 2006 for $10.... when i got it, the last owner had put the CMOS clear jumper wrong and it wouldn't boot.... though he told me that it booted with no video.... but he said he messed around with the memory and then it wouldnt show video.

But other than that.... the computer is still running fine after 7 years of operation. It is still solid as a rock and no errors or crashes have ever happened.... apart from Windows error on rare occasions.
I do know for a fact that the last owner used this board everyday for long hours to use the internet, work, music etc.

I'm just wondering if Tayeh were always bad capacitors or did they once have a good reputation? Or could it be the fact that i'm lucky for once in my life....?
It just seems that any other computer thing i have owned just breaks down by itself in one way or another.

    Thanks.

    Re: Good Tayeh caps?

My Pentium 3 machine is full of Tayeh caps. Although two of them have vented, the machine is still stable - and the rest of the caps still look immaculate, no bulging or leaking.

A work PC had nearly every GSC cap vented on the board, and yet was still stable when I left - though it recently died, according to a contact I have there.

It might be a good test case to leave the PC on for a long time and see if the remaining Tayeh caps show any signs of failure, or if the PC starts to show symptoms of bad caps.
You know there's something wrong when you open your PC and it has vented Rubycons...

Tayeh are not the worst bad caps - I've seen many boards with them with no problems.

Tayeh is OK for lower ripple-current applications, like K6/P1/P2-class machines. However, they do fail silently, so it's a good idea to recap them if you want long-term reliability and stability.
