    Oh Noes!!!

I was doing a lookover of my recent recapped mobo, the gigabyte I mentioned in a previous thread and got a scary surprise.
Two or three of those little resistors or capacitors that are the size of a pinhead have broken off the board and gone missing. Should I fear the worse or just expect a slight loss in performance?

You will have to fix that or suffer the consequences.

I don't know their resistances though.

Do you happen to have a resister sub box? Or two?
        Just a thought.

          Re: Oh Noes!!!

It depends on where they were, their purpose.

If you can get a good tight shot (picture) of the area and one a little further back for some context, it couldn't hurt.

It's possible "some" being missing would only reduce stability, maybe not below the threshold for the settings the board is running with now, or maybe enough to make it instable or not even post- so to that extent, I suppose it could be considered a loss of performance if you had to underclock something to regain stability (if it would help, depends on what it was).

Other such parts may be dedicated to a specific function and if you don't need that function, they may not matter (though torn traces might short against something, sometimes). Others are more critical, like the regulation subcircuit, having some resistor(s) missing could fry your CPU immediately. Usually caps missing are not that big a deal, with the tiny surface mounted ones they usually scatter those around and they're in parallel with others or filter bus noise that may or may not be a problem in any given system.

So look at where they were. If you can't get a closeup picture of that board, note the subcircuit they're in, and find another board (or forum member with board) that has this chipset the subcircuit supports. Quite often the layouts of boards change, but the basic reference design (or close enough) per chip is used and you can get a pretty good idea what values you need.

are you sure they are broken off??? there are quite a few places where components just aren't placed...for one reason or another.

I can see what looks like half of a mini capacitor on the board. the areas are not shiny like the places where parts were never installed.
As for a picture.....I'll get back to you.

The board is suffering from other troubles which didn't fit in this section.

How to clean Liquid Metal from under CPU?
                  by silver60618
Hi all, Im working on a board, that my customer brought to another shop, and smeared liquid metal all over the board.
The laptop powers on, then shuts off. I noticed traces of Liquid Metal near the edge of the CPU, but I fear some maybe underneath.

Has anyone ever tried Ultrasonic cleaning, or compressed air to remove or agitate the liquid metal?

Friend messed up my laptop motherboard while working on my bench
                  by Geeker007
                  Hi All,

So my friend was visiting and he wanted to use my solder bench to solder on some WLED circuit board. My laptop was open on the side for RAM upgrade. I know my mistake.

So while soldering he had too much solder on the soldering iron tip and he just shook off the soldering iron on the table itself to remove extra solder on the soldering tip and it landed on the motherboard of laptop. He then out of fear tried to remove it using solder wick and did more damage by removing some components as well. So here I am with weird situation.

                  I have not tried putting...

Dell Latitude 5511 audible electrical noise
                  by Asxetos21
I have a Dell Latitude 5511 laptop, and lately, a faint but clearly audible electrical (crackling) noise comes from the motherboard, similar to the random clicking coming from a mechanical hdd's heads moving inside it.
The laptop shows no signs of malfunction, and clearly this is electrical not mechanical, so my suspicion goes to a dodgy component in the power rails (a capacitor or a coil?). I fear this could develop into a serious damage.

Any advise on how to narrow it down?
                  The schematic is available here:

Samsung UE46F6400AWXXC not powering on, standby LED off
                  by UltimateNeutrino
Hello, since yesterday our Samsung UE46F6400AWXXC no longer powers on, with the standby LED off. It turned off when someone attempted to clean it, not sure if related. A few days ago, there was a similar issue, but it was solved after unplugging and replugging the power. Additionally, another user of this TV reported issues of the screen turning off randomly, which were solved changing the channel.

I originally suspected the PSU, but if the mainboard is unplugged the PSU relay closes and the backlight turns on. It's only when the mainboard is connected that the relay doesn't close...
