Do both sticks work correctly and pass testing with, say, Memtest86+ if used individually?

Re: ms-6788 848p neo v ram prob
Are these AMD64? I believe that early ODMCs on dual-channel Athlon-64/Opteron CPUs sometimes had difficulties when two unmatched DDR dimms of different capacities and/or timings were paired. The Rev E CPUs are supposed to have solved most of these issues (at least, I was able to use DDR400 paired with DDR 333 with my Rev E Athlon-64, but it dropped back to 333 on both DIMMs).

When you say it doesn't boot - do you mean that the screen simply stays dark/powered off, and the motherboard gives you a memory error code (whether beeps or C1 port 80)? Or something else?
What you could also try to do would be to clear the CMOS NVRAM, by removing the battery for a minute or so, or moving the appropriate jumper to the "clear cmos" position.

ras#precharge 3 clocks
ras# to cas# delay 3 clocks
precharge delay 8 clocks
burst length 8
agp aperture size 64mb
freqency voltage control
dynamic overclocking disabled
performance mode normal
cpu ratio selection locked
dram frequency auto
anyone know what to change to try make it work
screen just stays black to last question

Re: ms-6788 848p neo v ram prob
So hang on, you're saying that with both sticks installed the machine does in fact boot up, or at least POST...
Then what's the problem, as in, where does it actually go wrong? Does it only successfully POST sometimes, or hang while the OS is loading, or give you a particular blue screen?
If you can get so far as to boot from a CD, try running Memtest86+, last version is 1.65. You can download it from http://www.memtest.org

What does the part that you wrote, that I highlighted (in bold) mean? I really want to help you here - it's just that I don't get what you're trying to say.
If, with the 1G stick it does *not*, in either slot, POST - but leaves you with a black screen and no beeps, then there is *no way* you can access the bios/cmos setup screen, right?
If, additionally, you cannot POST with that one 1G DIMM, when your DRAM settings are set to the default 3-3-3-8, then generally, there is a problem. Either a compatibility issue between MB and DIMM, or a fault in the DIMM itself.
I suggest you try this:
1. Install your known good stick of RAM (512M) and nothing else. Then, in a safe manner, flash your MB's BIOS to the latest release from MSI. Sometimes BIOS updates resolve mysterious "hardware" issues.
2. Once that's done, power down, and clear your CMOS (nvRAM).
3. Then remove the 512M DIMM, and install the 1G DIMM first in one slot - and try to start up the machine. Failing this, try the 1G DIMM in the other slot. I'm assuming your MB has two slots, right?
4. If the system simply won't post, and acts dead with the 1G DIMM in either slot, then either:
a) The DIMM is, for some reason, not supported by your motherboard.
b) The DIMM is defective.
Let us know how it works out...

PS. Linuxguru: no, it's a socket 478 as far as I can see.Last edited by tiresias; 08-17-2006, 06:21 PM.
