    Advice Sought - 13 bad caps on Via VL-33S

    Hello. I have a mobo that is rare. It's a socket 423 VIA VL-33s (P4X266) board that--get this--takes PC2100 (DDR266) RAM and *not* rdram!

    Thus, I have a P4 1.7ghz CPU and a stick of 512 PC2100 RAM.

    Unfortunately, the 13 (all thirteen) 2200 uf 10v 105 degree caps are all leaking badly. It still runs fine though, and has never crashed!

    I've recapped a couple arcade game monitor boards before no problem.

    Questions: Should I bother trying to save this board? How much harder is it to recap a mobo vs a regular circiut board? Also which caps and from where are best to buy? I searched forums, but it was unclear. I can get 85 degree, but thoso are no good???

    Thanks,
    Loomis

    well its just tempting fate to keep running it in that condition, best to recap while it still posts and your job will be easier. It's your choice whether you want to recap the board, nobody can advise you on that really. its still a good machine for non gaming use.

    if you are in the us/canada you can get caps from Topcat owner of these forums if you send him a pm. otherwise check the following link :
    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=613

    the series to get are mentioned in the link. lower esr, higher ripple is better. it is not recommended to recap the board with 85oC caps, you need low esr 105oC caps. success with 85oC caps depends on their specs, it can result in the board having badcap type performance with new 85oC caps.

      Thanks for the info thus far.

      Would you say that someone who has several times replaced caps on older circuit boards (old arcade monitor boards and pinball boards, old electroic toys, radios, tube amps, etc) could do a cap job on a computer mobo? I ask because I keep reading that comp motherboards are tougher to recap because of board layers. Or is this bunk?

      I also see folks talking about using 60W irons on this board. I have always used and been told to use 35W irons! What gives?

      Thanks

        Are the capacitors in question GSC brand, pretty much most of the GSC on my DDR + Socket 370 board were bad... So I'm not suprised, hopefully VIA has fixed that little problem with the newer boards, though I've seen GSC on some of the new m-itx boards around here...
        Ya'll think us folk from the country's real funny-like, dontcha?

          Yes they are all GSC on the motherboard, but only the largest ones which are 2200uf are leaking.

          I do NOT want to replace all of the non-leaking, smaller-value GSC caps on the board, as there are probably 30 of them, and it isn't worth the amount of time and effort involved at that point.

            Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!

            I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

            For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

            It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

            Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps
            by eryjus
            Hello,

            First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

            I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

            I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

            HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair

            Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

            Identifying caps on an old Zoom 9000
            by Paxman_Swede
            Hello!

            I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

            The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

            I have studied the board and...

            GeForce 6800GT recap, need help identifying caps and finding replacements
            by fl0w
            Hi,

            I just noticed that my Asus V9999GT (GeForce 6800 GT) had some swelling capacitors. I managed to identify the brown ones, which are Nippon Chemi-Con KZG series, 6.3V 820µF, which I plan to replace with this.
            But for the yellow ones, I guess these are Fujitsu caps, without being able to identify which series... A picture of the video card is attached to the topic.

            I need to replace:
            • 2x 2.5V 1500µF => I plan to use this
            • 2x 16V 330µF=> I plan to use this
            • 1x 6.3V 680µF=> I plan to use this
            Am I correct with the cap choices?

            Thanks for...
