    Supermicro Servers

How are the supermicro servers now? Do they still use bad caps? Google comes up with almost no pictures of internals. The specific server I'm looking at is the 5014C-MF, with a LGA775 motherboard. So, has supermicro followed other companies lead into getting more reliable caps? If not, I'm gonna switch back to Gigabyte, as I've had success with their boards and UCCs.

    Re: Supermicro Servers

My Supermicro X5DAL-TG2 has genuine Sanyo WG caps on it out of the box. It's circa late 2004, and has been solid as a rock. Supermicro wasn't hit extremely hard by the bad caps plague, they just got bit in the ass with NSRY fakes. Real NSRY caps are made by Sanyo/Nippon, and are good quality. I know, late response to this thread, but I thought it was worthy of being answered.

holey shit talk about waking the dead is the OP still alive?

you can look at tyan also, both have good caps now. but if i was looking at an intel solution for pedestal chassis i would choose intel original for sure. but if its for 1u 2u on a budget then tyan or supermicro are cheaper.

and uuuuh i would be looking elsewhere than gigabyte for serverboards, there is also iwill

is there something wrong with gigabyte? I like Iwill. I have no idea how they make it work, but I bought that one that is like a shuttle (ITX) with dual AMD processors, and it manages not to overheat (it acutally stays around 43 C), inside the case the temp is 104 F.

P.S. thanks for responding. good thing supermicro doesn't have fake caps anymore.

Gigabyte server-grade boards have always proven reliable (with good caps ofcourse). I've never been a huge fan of Iwill, the DVD266u-RN and the DP533 with all their quirkiness turned me off rather quickly... I can't speak intelligently on their more recent stuff, the last Iwill board I had was that DP533 (dual P4 Xeon), and it was a turd....

well the Iwill died. it did over heat, and the power supply that came with looks like it helped it die. Too bad it wasn't my Iwill (i gave it to my brother who runs a web site for his small business on it.) It was in a HVAC room too.

Looks like I'll be choosing Gigabyte for my next workstation (i'll use their server boards)

Aren't Intel boards OEM Foxconn? A few boards on display at the local Fry's were full of Nichons.

yeh i think so. they did continue using nichicon after the problems but HM not HN. Still i saw a few retailers dropped intel boards after that. Availability is a PITA here now. They should force retailers to stock a selection of boards with the procs......It doesnt help that their top boards are expensive and they took so many years to get anything half interesting to the overclockers. The thing is that in the lower end the prices and value are good and they make excellent office pcs.

anyway back to topic. The Supermicro 5014C-MF which the op linked to is one of those tiny little 1u toaster boxes. they are useful cos you can pay for one rackspace and fit two inside. heh. I hope they have good cooling though cos that case is really small.

Yeah... I need the space. I have a music equipment rack, so it's only about half-depth. Will probably be a webserver/groupware for my band or for remote VPN. That Hipro looks kind of scary on the Intel server, though it looks like a good deal. Does it come with a riser?

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!

I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

                    Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps

                    Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

Identifying caps on an old Zoom 9000
                    by Paxman_Swede
                    Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

Help with switching power supply caps
                    by captain150
I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...

                    Gigabyte GA-6OXT :: caps question
                    by Foetuss
                    Good evening

I recently aquired a rev 1.1 Gigabyte 60XT, and was suprised of the amount of leaking caps for a motherboard of the P3 era. Especially the way the 330µf caps seems like the housing discolored even.
Now, there are some 3300µF 6.3V KZG series around the CPU. Would it be OK to replace them with something like EEUFR1A332 ? (Panasonic FR 3300µF 10V). Or was this board designed around very low ESR caps?

But I was also suprised about the bigger boys, which are 330µF 25V.
Could it be they used 25V caps because they were cheaper / available at that time?...
