    Viglen PC with bad caps

I'm not sure who made the motherboard for this PC, but the PC is made by Viglen and has a Pentium III processor. I use this PC mainly as a spare, in case one of my main PCs dies, though I have left it on overnight a few times doing big downloads

Most of the caps on this board are made by Tayeh - listed in the bad manufacturers list. Two of the caps have actually blown, catastrophic failure. The bottom cap is visibly bulged and has a small amount of electrolyte spilling out of the top. The top cap isn't bulged at all, but is pointing at a strange angle.

I can clearly see that one or both of the capacitors have blown the bung out of the bottom, and some electrolyte has spilled. This is worrying, since electrolyte is a conductor, and it's running dangerously close to the torroid coil (and over another solder pad)

Does the PC have a model number? like Viglen ### etc

You could also download and run a few utilities that could maybe hash out what the hardware is:

    Everest Home edition
    http://www.lavalys.com/

    Belarc Advisor
    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

They seem to fair well in looking up who made the parts in PC's.

Re: Viglen PC with bad caps

From what I can gather, the machine is a Viglen Contender P3 650. I assume the P3 650 bit means it's a Pentium III running at 650MHz. I am currently running Windows NT 4.0 on it, though I have the drive formatted using FAT so I can DOS-boot it (with a boot disk) when necessary.

What's strange is that despite the capacitors having catastrophically failed, the PC still works perfectly! There's just one issue I'm having - if I open a DOS box, and switch it to full-screen mode, the system freezes on a black screen. Nothing will get it back apart from prodding the front-panel Reset button with a pen. Does this sound like a capacitor issue or is it more likely a software/hardware configuration error?

Also, when shutting down, it will sometimes stick on a plain green background screen with nothing else on it. No 'Please wait while saving' message, no 'now safe to turn off' message, and the mouse stops moving. Other times it shuts down perfectly, and the APM turns it off.

Bad caps can result in various weird problems.

you can clean the electrolyte off the board using alcohol and cotton swabs. This is best done when you remove the offending capacitor as then you can clean where it was sitting also. I have recapped boards which had electrolyte leaked all down the board and dried, following recapping and cleaning of the electrolyte they became perfectly stable.

whatever your software problems it would be a good idea to fix those caps at least or better replace all dodgy brands on the board for a final proper job.

that machine would run win2k nice if you give it 256 ram.

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
            by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!
            by momaka
I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

            Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps
            by eryjus
            Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

Sony RCD-W3 Deck A (Playback only) not playing CDs (Disk Error) repair
            by goodpsusearch
Recently I was given for free a Sony RCD-W3 with the following symptoms, CD recorder drive reads CDs without any issues (haven't tested recording function yet because I don't intend to burn CDs on that machine) but the reader drive shows disc error after some seconds of it trying to read CD. Tried both CD-Rs and commercial audio CDs with same results.

First thing to do was to clean the lens but that didn't change anything. Googling the issue revealed that this is a common issue on several Sony CD recorder machines and the culprit is SMD electrolytic caps located on the PCB bellow...

Help with switching power supply caps
            by captain150
I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...
