    Gateway FPD2185 *plz help*

I am aware of and have read other threads mentioning the "power on for 2 sec" problems with these displays. However I have one that will stay on for about an hour then shut off (the blue power light also turns off), it will come back up 15-20 mins later and stay on for another 45-60 min and keep repeating this cycle.....any ideas on what the issue most likley is?

    Thanks in advance

I would guess that something's overheating. It takes it a while to get hot, and then it craps out until it can cool back down. Maybe open it up and run it with out the back and see if that helps keep things a little cooler. See if you can find any places that look like they got a little too hot.

One thing you can try is to locate test points for the power supply outputs. Compare voltages when it is working and when it shuts off; then troubleshoot accordingly.

Hmm, I haven't seen a board with two main filter caps before.

What brand are the those light blue caps on the bottom left? They look like Radio Shack brand?

Are you the original owner of the monitor? Have you recapped this board before?

I see those light blue color Radio Shack caps in some youtube videos re lcd repair.

How long ago did he replace them? Is he good with a solder iron? It could be that the Radio Shack caps are bad already or there are bad solder joints that would cause your monitor to go off after a while?

Most here will tell you probably to replace the Radio Shack caps with something like Rubycon, Panasonic, or United Chemi-con caps. If you decide to replace those Radio Shack caps, you might as well replace ALL the remaining caps on the board.

Lower right corner in first picture. There are points labeled (it looks like) 5V, Gnd, 12V; there may be more. Measure the voltage from Gnd to 5V and from Gnd to 12V with the monitor working, and not working.

If those are Radio Shack caps they are garbage and will have to be replaced.

Which ones will you be ordering? Members here will give an opinion. You don't want to be ordering new caps and then AFTERWARDS be told they are crap (again).

Also, make sure you get the right size and diameter. Some of those caps are a tight fit in that blue cluster.

Don't forget the little ones. They typically cost 25 cents or less.

PS. You can keep the Radio Shack caps for other applications.
