    replace the 400v line caps?

I've managed to repair a few monitors (yay), and I have four left to fix (yarg).

My question is: when someone who is presumably knowledgeable say "replace all the caps" (in a power supply, fer instance) is that meant to include the big 400v AC line cap? Do those fail often?

(I mean, do they fail as often as other caps that fail often on boards that often have often-failing caps on 'em?)
(That last bit doesn't entirely make sense, but I hope you know what I mean .)

Thing is, I'm hoping I can keep the parts count low when I put in an order, since I don't have any income lately.

Re: replace the 400v line caps?

Well they CAN go bad, there have been several accounts here where the 400v cap has gone bad, but it is much less frequent than the output side caps. Personally, I've only ever worked on 1 monitor, and all it's output caps were bad, but the 400v input cap was fine. In most of the ATX power supplies I've worked on, all the secondary side caps can be bulging/leaking, and the 200v caps (2 in series makes a 400v cap) were fine, and they were fuhjyyu!

So basically, it's rare, but it does happen. Plan accordingly. Good luck!

The input caps are usually fine.
I had one Shuttle power supply, where the primary and all secondary caps were bad, with the exception of 2 470uf 16v.

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!

I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

Identifying caps on an old Zoom 9000
        by Paxman_Swede
        Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

Okay to use 6.3V caps on 3.3V line of PC PSU?
        by em132
        Hi,

I'm currently in the process of re-capping a NOS (new old stock) Sparkle ATX-400PN (from the late-2000s), which was chock-full of Teapos and CapXons . Am looking to put a yummy mix of NCCs, Panos and Rubys in their place.

Here's the problem I ran into: The 3.3V rail is filtered by a single 4,700uF/10V Teapo... The problem? This thing is only 10mm wide, and a wider (12mm) cap will not fit! I've searched the "big three" shops (Mouser, Digikey, Newark/Farnell) and all the 4,700uF/10V I found were at least 12mm wide. The closests matches I could...

Which caps to replace: ECS P4M800Pro-M V1.0A
        by Mattz_GT
It's feeling like this board has a case of badcaps, instability and reboots - and not wanting to necro a a very old thread, it seems the 680uF 4V are highly suspect.
I don't really want to blanket recap everything, but maybe the others around that area could do with being changed?

Equipment: I have a temperature controlled soldering station, read the bit where it says set to 400F, don't think I would have gone that high without reading that.
Spring plunger solder sucker, and some desolder braid... and a bit of good old leaded 60/40.

        PS. Additional diagnostic,...
