    Proview 19" monitor bad caps

    Hi guys ,

After my successful recap of an acer monitor that i had got hold of i decided to have a look inside my main monitor that i have been running constantly since i got it back in 2005..

Well after getting inside i noticed a few bulged caps in the power board as well as main board..Power board has xunda caps in which were bulged (not all )

    They are -

    x6 470uf 25v
    x1 220uf 25v
    x2 10uf 50

Plus 2 caps that said somethink CON (could not make them out ,but they are a greenish color with a gold stripe) both 100uf 25v.

Now the main board has Leaguer RT1 caps on which some are bulged -

    x7 220uf 16v
    x10uf 16v
    x2 47uf 16

Well i was thinking of replacing all to be on the safe side with pan FMS ..I have some spare from my recent recap . I have -

    x4 220uf 25v ( gonna use these for the 220 16v)
x1 47 uf 25v (will also use this for the 47uf 16v plus get some more)
x4 470uf 25v (will need to get some more of these)

    Shame i have some spare pan FMS 1000uf 25v x4, 1000uf 10v x3 of these.

Any good tips on opening monitors as i used a guitar pick and flat knife but for some reason some of the little tabs break off..I have super-glued them back for when i put the monitor back together once i have capped it.The monitor will look fine once back together and no one would notice but it's a pain taking front bezel off I was real careful when i did it but it still happened ..i guess they don't like us mending them our selves

That power supply looks the same as the one in a 17" Proview I just did.
I only had 4 680uf 25v Panasonic FM to hand, so I popped them in with 2 470uf 25V Xunda of that tested OK on the Atlas ESR meter.

It works fine now, before I got a white hazy screen with a pink tint, now that I know it actually works fine, I have a proper set of caps coming for it.

I'm surprised that your mainboard is so bad, I've not come across a damaged one in a monitor I've re-capped so far.

Is it ok to mix and match caps if you cannot find all the same make or series..

          I have -
          x4 220uf 25v
          x1 47 uf 25v
          x4 470uf 25

          All these are pans FM

I was gonna order off this site the following in SAMXON -

          x4 220uf 25v GT
          x2 470uf 25v GT
          x2 100uf 25v GK

Still need to get these- (which might be a different make as i cannot find any on this site) Caps are more expensive here as you cannot get them in single caps that are low ESR.
          x7 10uf 16v
          x2 10uf 50v
          x2 47uf 16v

Diameter and height i am ok with ,just seems a waste not to use my spares but that would mean there would be a mix of caps together..

          Just thought i'd ask.

No problem at all, I'm looking at a power supply right now that has at least two brands and three series of caps.

The only time you don't want to mix different brands or series is when the circuit puts the caps in parallel or in series to increase their working voltage or capacitance.

Re: Proview 19" monitor bad caps

Well guys update on the proview.. I got the caps from Bigpope and i must say his shipping was ultra fast to here in the uk.Thanks Bigpope.

Took the bulging caps out and the ones that looked ok..Replaced with the Samxon (from Bigpope ) and some pan FMs i had spare..

Put them in and now i am back using my 19" monitor again

Just out of curiosity i measured the caps that i took out (xunda and Leaguer caps).

The 220uf 16v leauger measured 15.4 ohms Esr and the capacitance was 46.5

another one was 13.0 ohms ESR and the capacitance was 47.6

others were - 9.5 ESR and cap 104.5

                  14.2 ESR and cap 39.3

                  8.8 ESR and cap 121.4

                  47 uf 16v was 5.2 ESR and cap 55.5

10 uf 50v was 4.3 ESR and cap was 11.5

                  another 47uf 16v was 3.8 ESR and cap 63.1

                  10uf 16v was 6.7 ESR and cap 10.9

                  The xunda cap -
470 uf 25v was 3.3 ESR and cap was 106.0

some of the other caps were fine but i replaced them any way..the measurements were with mikes micro v4 ESR tester.

Another monitor saved from the planned obsolescence axe.

                    Nice job .

Thanks ..It's a nice feeling when it happens ,same with my desktop speakers that i brought back from the dead and other recapping that i have done ..Not bad for a newbie ,really glad i found this site cause it's got me hooked on electronics ..Still learning and asking questions as thats the only way i can find things out apart from reading on here and some ebooks i have purchased to do with with monitors and tvs.
