ViewSonic VX992 (Bad Caps)

Hello everyone,

This is my first post, so I want to make sure I am respectful to everyone here. I have a ViewSonic VX992 monitor I found on the side of the road (garbage day). It had bad caps and wouldn't turn on but I found the bad caps on the PCB and went to the closest electronics store.

So the caps I needed were such:

2 1000uf @ 10v
3 470uf @ 25V
1 470uf @ 10V

I bought 4 470uf @ 25V and 5 1000uf @ 16V... The guy said I could use one of the 470uf @ 25V instead of a 470uf @10V. He also said I could use the 1000uf @ 16V instead of 1000uf @ 10V ones.

So was he right? Do those voltage differences really matter. Will it hurt the monitor at all?

Any input would be much appreciated!

The rated voltages on capacitors are the maximum voltage that can be applied. So the 10v caps are on a circuit which is running at less than 10v, so the 25v caps will be fine. However, there is another issue. The caps you replaced are most likely in the output filtering portion of the PSU, and they need to have low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance). Most electronics stores I've been to don't carry low ESR caps, just general purpose ones. If you post the manufacturer and series of the original caps, and the ones you bough either myself or somebody else here can advise you further. I believe that you should be able to install the general purpose caps to test to see if that fixes the problem, but then don't use the monitor until you can order some proper low ESR caps to install. People here will be able to advise you on that as well. Oh, and pictures always help

Another thing you have to be aware of when replacing capacitors with a higher voltage rating is their size. Make sure that the replacements will physically fit.

I had to replace some 1000uF 16V capacitors recently. All I had in my spares box were 25V versions. Although the lead pitch was the same, the 25V capacitors were too tall, & would have fouled the metalwork when the board was refitted. I had to order the 16V ones before I could repair the unit.

Sorry for the late reply, work has been killing me. Anywho, I got some pictures of the PCB and the caps. Also both sets of caps I bought are identical in size and they are the same size as the ones on the board.

The ones on the board are CapXon? and the ones I bought are NC? I think...

I will have to solder them very close to the board in order to make sure it all still fits nicely.
