    ViewSonic VP201s looses display!!

I just joined and love the site....very nice!! I finished reading some interesting info at this thread about the same model ViewSonic monitor with different issues: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...ewsonic+vp201s

Anyway, my VP201s lost the display and when I re-checked things and plugged the cable back in all that happens is I get a picture of a small monitor and it goes through what looks like a progression check for what type of connection or cable you have connected to the monitor. It will show a picture of a small monitor and say DVI-A, then switch and another little monitor will pop up that says DVI-B and then another will say D-SUB and then the screen will go completely dark. The power button will remain lit on the front monitor face, but that's it....nothing on the display.

I opened the back up completely and checked all of the caps to see if there was any visible evidence, such as a blown top, etc., but everything looks okay!! I'm not certain where to head next?!?! I would greatly appreciate any info or assistance that anyone would be kind enough to share with me to help get this thing going again!! It has been a very good monitor until this issue!
    Thanks again for having me,

By the description, this appears to be an example of the 'two seconds and dark' problem. If the power button remains lit until you turn off the computer or disconnect the video cable, you have confirmed that is the problem. Also, you can try shining a bright light on the screen and see if you can see the desktop.

I suggest buying a 'case mod light kit' and using that to troubleshoot the problem. The kit consists of an inverter and a couple of CCFLs. Use the kit inverter to test the monitor CCFLs; use the kit CCFLs to test the monitor inverter.

Don't buy anything yet. Shine a flashlight onto the screen when it goes dark and tell us if you can see anything, we'll go from there.

Great advice. Note that's exactly what I told him to do.

          Weirdlookinguy & PlainBill,
Thanks for the advice!! I shined the light and I don't see any of the desktop. After looking at the screen in a completely dark room it appears that the monitor is not totally black after the little monitor display disappears....if that help to analyze the problem.

There are a couple of ways to test this. The easiest is to try it in a dark room with the back of the monitor off. Usually there are several holes in the back of the LCD panel that will allow you to see if the backlights are working. (Yeah, I know pulling the back off that monitor is a bear.) If the backlights are working, this is probably a logic card problem. The only suggestion I could make is to use an ESR meter to check all the caps and if any show a high ESR, replace them all.

I have your monitor's 'big brother' - the VP211b. I've had problems that were resolved by replacing the logic card. Other than firmware, the two logic cards are identical.

With all due respect, don't attach a compressed picture file to a post. Converting a .jpg to a .rar doesn't reduce the size significantly and makes it much more difficult to view. It also has been used by the unscrupulous in an attempt to infect the systems of the unwary.

As for the problem, see my comments above about the 'two seconds to black' problem.

                    Bill,
I apologize profusely for compressing the picture. My intention was completely non-malicious! I added the arrow in Word which changed the extension and it would not upload as a "docx" file.....every site is different I guess. Thanks for the heads up about it.

Back to the issue at hand, once I have completed the testing of the caps, which may take some time because of my schedule, I will let you know the outcome. Thank you very much for your help with this!!
