Wondering if it is possible to "upgrade" the caps in my LCD monitor

    Good day
I have a ProView monitor that was whistling, so some whiz (MD Willington) suggested I check the caps, which was the issue.

    Bads caps, 1000uf 25v

My questions are; is it possible to put bigger better caps in rather than using the same size as I just took out?

Is that worth it or asking for more problems than it is worth?

If it is worth it then what would be a better size cap to use?

I just read your post again, I am not sure what you meant by bigger. Physically larger? Higher Capacitance?

In terms of physical size, as long as it fits, it's great!! The main constraint would probably be height, so watch out for that.

In terms of capacitance, you can get away with going away from the original value a bit. However be wary of changing the capacitance too much, unless you study the electronic circuit, it is likely you do not know how changing the capacitance in the circuit will affect the operation of the monitor.

      Thanks Shadow
Higher Capacitance is what I meant but when I posted I could not remember that big word!!!

Thankfully you were able to interpret my vague question.

I will take your advice and stick with the numbers on the caps I removed.

Thanks again and I hope you have a great day!

Re: Wondering if it is possible to "upgrade" the caps in my LCD monitor

You can "upgrade" your caps, for example if the board is full of HERMEI caps or other crap-brand caps you can "upgrade" by removing them and putting on suitable Nichicon, United-Chemicon, Sanyo, Panasonic, Rubycon or SAMXON replacement caps in their place.

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
          by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Replacement caps for Samson Resolv studio monitor 65A Amp board.
          by black6host
          Good day!

I have a Samson Resolv studio monitor that has no sound output. I've opened it up and found two caps that are bulging on what I believe to be the power supply section of the amplifier board. The board is marked Resolv 65A AMP V1.2. The caps in question are YUSCON, 2200uF, 35V, 85C temp and have markings of RA(P) and are 16mm x 25.5mm tall. I've attached the schematic and the caps in question are C5 and C6. I'm assuming they are low esr caps. I've tested both caps and they test low uF, nowhere near 2200uF.

I'm going to replace the caps and I'll be the first...

Dell Optiplex GX260 - Advice Needed for Polymodding Motherboard
          by SwedishDiesel
          Howdy folks,

I have an Optiplex GX260 that blew a couple of those troublesome Nichicon HM series (ultra low ESR) electrolytic capacitors. Because said caps are obsolete, they are pretty much impossible to find on the market; I did find a listing for some but I believe they are counterfeit. I feel the easiest thing to do would be to replace all the blown caps with polymer ones. I am by no means an expert in electronics, and I've found a fair bit of conflicting information, so any guidance or confirmation would be greatly appreciated. While from a practical standpoint it's not worth...

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!
          by momaka
I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

          Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps
          by eryjus
          Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."
