Sony Vaio VGC-JS410F Black Screen of Doom!

    Hey all!

I got one of these all in one Vaio machines for free, there was 2 stickers on the device.

    NO HDD (easy fix) DONE!
    LCD/Backlight problem (Hmmmmm)

So I took it home put in a 200g SATA drive and it fired up but after 2-3 minutes the screen would go blank (you can see the video feed with a flashlight) and wouldn't come back unless I power cycled the unit off and back on.

I had the back off and propped up on a box and after 2 or 3 more power cycles it stayed on long enough to install Win7 and do several updates. It wasn't till I turned it back off to put the back on that it started doing the 2-3 minute to black screen again.

I thought maybe something was grounding off on the back but there is nothing that could possibly do that. Even after I took the back back off again it would still kill the CCFL's after 2-3 minutes.

    Fast Forward.

So I bought a used replacement Inverter got it in last night and power up the machine and it managed to stay on for about 10 min and then a quick flicker and POOF back to a black screen again. After a second reboot I noticed a slight CCFL flicker now.

So is it safe to assume I got a bad CCFL? I did do some testing, I pulled each CCFL plug (only 4) off the inverter and it would shut down the others in 1 min or less. I did accidently leave one plug too close to the female plug and it started to arc (whoops!) melted the plug a little but remarkably it still works like it was originally (shutting down after 3-4 minutes) I still have the original inverter board too.

I took a voltage reading off a test point and the inverter is getting a solid 19v from the mainboard with the CCFLS on and when they get shut down.

Not sure what to do next!

that's what I was thinking too. I can only find raw CCFL's not ones that are prewired/plugged.

Sometimes the wires develop bad connections and only need to be resoldered.

They are not hard to solder new wires onto new bulbs. Just grab some heatshrink tubing and shrink it over the connection once soldered.

            Gotcha!

So this weekend I managed to find the Original power supply for it at a thrift store. 19.5v 3.7amp Sony VIAO power brick.

I fired it up and it stayed on for almost 30 min, then the back lamps failed again (still the original ones) then on next reboot it was back to only staying on for 3-5 minutes.

My bet is on the wiring inside the LCD panel, particularly the connections to the bulbs.
