Viewsonic: repeated power off/on required to get display

    Hi,

I have an interesting problem with my Viewsonic monitor, that someone here might enjoy or know something about. I'd not very valuable, but as a matter of prinicple, I'd rather not throw it away since it works perfectly except for one thing.

From a fresh PC boot, the signal doesn't seem to be detected. If I turn off the monitor via the standby button and back on again, the monitor displays the image for a slightly longer time, even if it's almost impercetible. Repeating this proceedure up to 20 times, the image stays longer each time becoming long enough to be detected properly and stays permanently. At this stage, turning the monitor off and on again, results in normal operation.

The PC build is relatively new and overclocked. The motherboard, a P67, could do with a bit more power, only 4 of it's 8 power pins are connected. Everything worked fine for a number of weeks after the build and the voltages on the mobo seem stable, even when fully loaded. This leads me to believe that the mobo power is unlikely to be the problem.

It sounds to me like a capacitor / psu problem in the monitor. Like something isn't getting chance to fully charge, before it's power is being switched out, but I'm very interested in hearing any suggestions that people may have on how best to confirm the source of the problem and ideas on how to fix it.

    Thanks for reading,

    Craig.

The best thing to do is to open the monitor up and look at the caps in the power supply. If they are bulging, replace them with low ESR, name brand caps such as Panasonic FM series. If you aren't sure what you are seeing, take a well lit, clear picture (at least 1000 x 1000 pixels) of the power supply and attach it using 'Manage Attachments' - below the text entry area.

Thanks for your response, Bill. Your 5,770(!) posts seem to indicate that you know what you're talking about and it matches what I'd expect. I shouldn't have too much difficulty replacing the caps, since I'm not entirely new to electronics. I'd really rather not have any downtime, so before I go cracking open the case - how sure are you that this is the problem? Also, if anyone else has any suggestions, I'd like to hear them too!

Not at all sure; the 'slow turn on' symptom is typical of bad caps, but you seem to have an additional wrinkle.

Wait!!! 5770 posts!!! What was I thinking. I could have been watching TV.

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
          by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 - no power
          by PantherDave
          Hi all!

I'm trying to troubleshoot a Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 that won't power on. Motherboard model is M1007506-015. My priority is retrieving data, but the SSD is integrated so it looks like if I can't repair it it'll need to go to a data recovery company. I've done a little basic board repair before, but nothing this advanced until now. So please forgive my ignorance in advance. 😅

I found the boardview for this laptop in the forums here, and am able to open it on my PC with FlexBV.

          Asus Probook P5440UF-XB74 power issue
          by GLISIT
          Hi all,

TL;DR - this laptop is driving me nuts with the oddball power-related behaviors. Appreciate any insight you can provide!

I'm experiencing a power issue on an Asus Probook P5440UF-XB74. Although I've worked with electronics and computers for decades, this is my first attempt at getting into motherboard-level component troubleshooting. Any help the community can provide is greatly appreciated!

A few weeks ago I was using the laptop (on battery power) for a Zoom meeting. The battery was running very low (long meeting) but I wasn't worried about...

Power supply Manson NTP-5561 (5661) LCD controller dead - PIC18F87K90 HEX dump required
          by Andreas_de
          Hello!

i got a damaged Manson NTP-5561 (60V, 1,6A DC output) and and the main issue is that the controler IC for the LCD display has a short. The controler IC PIC18F87K90 is mounted on the back of the back of the LCD. Vss-Vdd = 3 Ohm. The 5V and 3,3V power line was killed as well, but that is not a problem. A new LDO 3,3V and 5V 7805 is already ordered.
Replacing the PIC18F87K90 is necessary but that makes no sense without having the HEX dump of the new controler.

Does anybody have such a power supply and could do a HEX dump of the Flash and EEPROM memory?

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
          by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...
