Acer x193w

First off, its a vga only display, I got it for free and I am new to doing these kind of repairs.....please be patient with me!

Problem: Plug display in...Power light turns on(orange) and in a flash the acer logo comes up and power light turns blue, then it imediately turns back off and repeats everything.

Things look okay, except a few spots of solder were dull/looked unpolished like cast aluminum. I dont see any bulged tops of caps or bottoms for that matter on the power board or input board.

Just looking to see if anybody else has had similar issues or idea for me to investigate, I have a fluke meter and soldering iron. Please help me out and more importantly have a great day.

Only two more pictures are necessary at this point.

1. A clear, sharp, well lit picture of the top of the power supply / inverter.

2. A clear, sharp, well lit picture of the bottom of the power supply / inverter.

The first thing I do with this model,is to plug in test Backlights,as the main fault with these is usually failure of the top backlight,normally due to one of the return wires burning out.

This sounds like 'Two seconds to black'. Possible causes include bad capacitors, a bad inverter transformer, bad CCFLs or the wiring to the CCFLs, or a problem in the protection circuitry.

I've attached a picture. Two pins on one transformer have been circled in yellow. What is the resistance between those pins? Two pins on the other transformer have been circled in orange. What is the resistance between those pins?

Do you have any spare CCFLs, or access to another monitor that can be disassembled?

505.4 (yellow) and 500.7 (orange) ohm's. I dont have anything around for spares, but I do have a friend who does have a few broken monitors.

Those resistances indicate the transformers are probably good.

Those look like standard connectors for the CCFLs. I'd suggesting borrowing one (or more) of your friend's monitors and try connecting the CCFLs in them to this inverter. They 'test' CCFLs can stay in his panel, all you are doing is hooking them up to your inverter.

If no combination of CCFLs will work with your inverter, it is time to start replacing caps. We know if a cap is bulging, it is bad. We know certain brands are very reliable. And we know some brands are not very reliable. I'd guess the caps with the black sleeves are Capxon. The green ones may be Lelon or Elite, neither of which are good..

I have the same kind of monitor (X193W) and it still works like a charm.

I believe the green caps are Samxon GK.
GK appears to be the best series used in LCD monitors.
I read something about GK here a while back and found nothing bad in particular about them.

I know I heard about GF before and was told to replace those pronto.

It looks like GK could be a lot better than GF.

But, I modded mine, just got rid of the back plastic grille. Just in case they're likely to go bad from heat.

After hooking everything back up here is the full description of what happens,

1. Plug power in
2. Power led turns on (orange)
3. Power light turns blue
4. Monitor flashes on for a second fully lit so the ccfl's APPEAR to be working because the acer logo is vibrant and crisp
5. It all shuts back off
6. Repeats steps 2-3-4-5

The only monitor I was able to get ahold of died the same day when I turned it on so I have been fighting to get a different one. But I did see something that I was curious about.

In the red circle, its a tantalum cap(at least from what I have found online) that has a black top like the brown was burned away?

The part you circled is a ceramic cap. The picture isn't large enough that I can say much about the black spot on the top. It COULD be damaged; the black mark could be something from a QC examination; or could actually be a spark gap.

The symptoms you describe almost sounds like the inverter was drawing too much power. Have you checked the output voltages of the power supply while this is happening, in particular the 5 volt output? (Excuse me if this has already been answered, it's late and I don't feel up to rereading the entire thread.)

I completely understand being tired, I have two little girls, one is three in a few months and the other is 5mo. I havent checked it but I will try to tonight. I will try to get a close up on that cap too.

You have a different problem. Ordinarily I like to see all problems with a given monitor in one thread, but troubleshooting two different problems in one thread is difficult for everyone, so I'm going to ask you to start a new thread.

Start by taking three or four pictures of the monitor. One should be a top view of the power supply, the second a bottom view of the power supply, a third of the top of the signal card, and optionally, a fourth of the entire back of the monitor. It really helps if each picture is at least 1000 x 1000 pixels, well lit, and sharply focused. Pictures from directly above the board are best because the entire picture will be in focus.

Then start a new thread with a description of the problem. Attach the pictures using 'Manage Attachments' - below the text entry area.

had the same monitor and had virtually the same symptoms. I also changed a lamp, but the monitor did not want to go. I tried to change the capacitors, but also nothing to do. I bought the power supply board in China for about 19 euros. Now the monitor works. I have pieces of the old card if you want
