So I am replacing a LCD panel in an old Inspiron 5100 laptop, as the backlight had gone out. It wasn't worth buying a new LCD for, so the owner decided to replace it with a used one. I plugged it in and it's nice and bright. I noticed after running it for a few minutes that the frame around the bottom of the LCD was quite hot. The inverter was not hot, so I'm guessing it was the lamp itself making this heat. I usually only deal with new replacement LCDs, so I normally don't check for things like this. Is this normal, or cause for concern?

Re: Laptop LCD backlight gets hot - normal?
For me personally, I would be concerned. I have used a number of laptops over the years and never remember it being hot in that area.--- begin sig file ---

Re: Laptop LCD backlight gets hot - normal?
I repair Laptops every day, and have owned a 5160 for awhile and I have never seen the screen get very hot on anything. did you stay with a matted screen or go to a ultra brite? maybe invertor over powering the screen.Comment

Re: Laptop LCD backlight gets hot - normal?
I tested with a few new LCDs I had around. I didn't want to dig them out, but the responses I got here had me concerned... Well, turns out they all got a bit warm with the lamp on, all using their own inverters. It does not get warm enough to feel though the plastic case, but the metal frame holding the LCD does get a bit warm right by the lamp. I decided it's nothing to worry about given that a new panel does the same. I'll throw it back together tomorrow and call that job done.Comment

Re: Laptop LCD backlight gets hot - normal?
Yes it's normal. Don't worry, they won't go into thermal runaway, they reach their operating point and stabilize there.Originally posted by PeteS in CARemember that by the time consequences of a short-sighted decision are experienced, the idiot who made the bad decision may have already been promoted or moved on to a better job at another company.Comment

This surface laptop had a backlight flickering. I put some heat on the edp socket and some capacitors around (I think cold solder occurred) the socket, but after some days the problem came back. Then, immediately after turning it on, the system firmware update appeared(black screen with bar ), and during the test(press hand on the socekt) for the edp connector, whether it was broken or not, the system turned off (because when press on camera socket the backlight is got ok) and finally, when it turned on, the backlight was on, but no disp. When I pressed the F4 key to go to the bios, the display...

Let me tell you a little bit about what happened to my laptop (MSI GF63 THIN 11UCX model: MS-16R6) that “maybe” you know how to solve this problem.
So before this problem happened, my laptop was running smoothly. When I wanted to restart my laptop, it looked fine at first. But after I waited for this restart process to take a long time, until finally I panicked (because the restart process did not finish plus the laptop screen only showed a black screen), I immediately pressed and held the power button to force the laptop to turn off. But... -
