    Gateway FPD1760

    Hello all,
    I am trying to repair a Gateway FPD1760 monitor (manufactured 8/05) that has the 'on for 2 seconds then black' problem. Ive disassembled the unit (a bit of a PITA) down to the PS board. The PS board has 'YP1704G' and '6871TPT317A' printed on it. The back label has 'PT5602F317A0408'. The caps are as follows:
    C203, C205 = 680uF 25V
    C204 = 470uF 25V
    C206 = 680uF 10V
    C103 = 47uF 50V

    Im going to replace C203, C204, C205, and C206. As you can see in the attached pics C203 and C205 and definately bulging at the top. Im not sure that I should replace C103 (the one away from the others). ? I was planning to get the Rubycon premium caps from this site (badcaps.net) but they dont have all these values. I see that they are available in Samxon, the 470uF are available in both 25V and 35V, which should I get? Also if I replace C103 which is 47uF 50V is see that it is only available in 25V (Rubycon). I assume this is not adequate.

    Has anyone seen/worked on this PS board? Any other thoughts or inputs you have regarding this PS is welcome. Thanks.

    Just a follow up - I went to the Digikey site and found the following Panasonic type FC:

    C203, C205 = 680uF 25V = P10277-ND
    C204 = 470uF 25V = P10275-ND
    C206 = 680uF 10V = P10222-ND
    C103 = 47uF 50V = P10321-ND

    Not sure which way to go. All advice welcome. Thanks.

      Welcome to the forum! Good job so far on identifying the bad caps. Panasonic FC are a good choice, but the Panasonic FM series have slightly better specs and are about the same price through Digikey. However, either will work. Additionally, compare the height and width of the new caps to the old ones. Remember that you have to reinstall the RF shield over the power and logic boards and too tall a cap will prevent that. As for width, you have that cluster of 4 caps. Too wide a cap will "crowd out" the other caps.

      If you are in the USA, select the USPS First Class option for shipping, which will cost you around $2.75.

        Hello,
        Thank you for the welcome!

        I chose the FC series because I though they were better that the FM series based on the link at this thread (perhaps I mis-read it):

        https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2280

        What spec should I look at between the equivalent FC and FM capacitors so I can see that the FMs are better? The caps I chose have the same mechanical package as the ones Im replacing so everything should fit fine. I was going to purchase double qty of all the caps I need and the total at Digikey came out to just over $6, so I would definately go with the USPS shipping. Do you think I need to replace that C103? - its the one in the first pic, lower right hand corner of the board just to the right of big ass one thats laying down.

        Thanks again.

          Yes, many here replacing all the caps. Caps do not have to bloated in order to be bad. They can be out of uF tolerance or have high ESR (ohms).

          So yes, replace C103.

            OK, I will replace C103 as well as C203, C204, C205, and C206. I have ordered the Panasonic FC caps from Digikey - the FM series are all on back order. I found that the FM series are all less expensive that the FC which I find weird if infact they are actually better quality that the FC series.

            I wont take out the old caps until I have the new ones in hand so it probably going to be a while until I post again but I will keep everyone up to date on my progress.

            Thank you to ALL for the help.

              You misread the list. They are listed in order of decreasing ESR (lower is better). Going with FM over FC often saves you money and gets you a cap with better endurance and lower ESR.

              I agree with retiredcaps - replace C103. It's inexpensive, and when it fails the monitor won't work.

                From feedback here, you should get your caps in the next 24 to 48 hours from Digikey.

                  OK everyone - thanks for all the input. I should see the FCs in a few days and will check back in then.

                  Thanks again.

                    Hello to all,
                    I just wanted to check back in and say that replacing all the caps on my PS board was succesfull!!! I cant believe that for $3.00 worth of capacitors I have my monitor up and running again. I could not have done it without this site and all that helped. THANK YOU!!!

                    I think the hardest part of the repair was getting the monitor case apart without breaking anything (small hidden tabs all along the case halves). Also some of the internal connectors are difficult to unmate/mate due to there not being much 'slack' in the internal wiring harnesses. BTW the 5 caps I replaced (C103, C203, C204, C205, and C206) cost about $3.00 from Digikey (I used Panasonic FCs that were in stock) and since they were so inexpensive I ordered double quantity. USPS shipping was about $2.00 (and it came in 2 days!) so the whole she-bang was a whopping $8.00

                    I took lots of pictures but here are just a few showing the new caps install on the PS board (see my previous post in this thread for 'before' pictures of the PS board), the re-assembly of the PS module, and monitor re-assembly:

                        Some of the older 2002-2003 era LCD monitors that I have seen personally use 4 screws instead of clips/tabs.

                        All the new LCDs use the clips/tabs probably because it is cheaper to manufacturer and that there are "no user serviceable parts" inside!

                        PS. Congrats on a successful repair.
