Nihon Kohden (Tyco Electric) ET2400LM 24" Restoration

This was rescued from a recycle gaylord from a hospital along with some other things....

I don't have to explain the significance of restoring this; 16:10 Aspect Ratio, 1920x1200; very high end Samsung LTM240CT04 panel. Add in it's blonde (will pair nice with a retro rig) and also ELO touchscreen. It is very well made, very heavy. Even used these are hard to find and expensive....but it had some problems...

Problem one, the external PSU was missing. I found one in my stash that had the correct voltage (12V) with the goofy 4-pin plug it used. It however was light on the amperage. The unit calls for 6.8A, the one I found was 4.16A. It did power it....so it's fine for testing purposes....and we'll get back to this later.

Problem two, CCFL tubes bad. Upon powerup, I could hear the very faint hiss and then it'd go into protection. I could actually smell the ozone generated from the internal arcing. I bought a complete set of tubes for it.

Problem three, the polarizer sheet was badly yellowed. All of the light diffusers were fine, but the polarizer sheet was brittle and yellow....

    Ok, here we go!

You can see the yellowing on the diffuser sheet, in the pic more on the left side. I have an idea to cure this....

...but first lets replace the CCFL's....if that's a failure, it's moot....I'll just toss it, I won't buy another set for it if I break the new ones. In pieces.

Yea, that thing....but we'll return to that shortly...

    New CCFL tubes.

    Install was a breeze.

Now for the junk diffuser sheet..... The cure is in the form of a Dell U3011 that had a cracked panel. I removed the broken panel and was otherwise very careful not to touch the polarizer sheet. If you crud them up, they are very difficult to clean without damaging their polarizing properties (you can't use cleaners on them).

Carefully laid the old one over the donor. You can really see the discoloration on this pic. If that old sheet was used, the image quality would be horrible.... Yellowed out whites and colors would be off.

    Taped in place.

Employing a fresh razor blade and a straight edge, very carefully cut out the replacement sheet from the donor using the original as the pattern...again being very careful not to touch the good portion of the sheet. This took over an hour.

I didn't have to trim a thing!! Fit like a glove!!

What's left of the U3011 and the old sheet.

    Going back together.

I must admit, I did test fire it before buttoning it up. It worked.

...and here we are! Perfection! Nice white raster! It's not dark/discolored on the left side, it's the viewing angle with the camera.....I didn't want my ugly mug in the reflection.

Now for the power supply issue..... This supply would power it, but it was definitely overloaded. It got miserably hot. I looked online for an OEM replacement, none to be had. Found some chinese knockoffs.....but I'll pass on those.

Removed the wire with the goofy 4-pin plug on it....

Enter in a Powerman 120W ITX Proprietary that came from a scrap bin. +12V rail is rated for 8A, more than plenty. Perhaps this should be in the ghetto mod thread...

Not bad build quality. Secondary caps are Samxon GK series, not my favorites in the world, but GF was the problematic series, so I just rolled with these. I did check the outputs on the scope, they were clean.

Someone had cut all the wires off.

I removed them the rest of the way; desoldered from the PCB and tossed.

Soldered the PSU_ON (green wire) to the nearest ground on the inside and then wired the monitor wire to +12 and GND.

Fabricated a bung to keep everything in place.

    ...and shazam!!! Success!

I'll dig out a 40MM fan grille for the fan, but otherwise this is a perfect replacement for the missing PSU. Yes, I'll get the sticker goo off it....that was actually a Win7 COA.

Was this worth all the work I put in? Maybe or maybe not.....but it was a fun challenge and good save of a high end display. These displays are for medical equipment.

When I got into the menu, the contrast & brightness were all the way up...no wonder the CCFL's melted down and the polarizer sheet discolored.

Nice work! I am supposed to be getting some old stuff too in a little while. Not sure what condition this is going to be in, but time will tell. Maybe there will be a few good threads in badcaps.
As for “was it worth the repair” question:
I see any commercial high end monitor worth fixing as long as it is a proper fix. There is always someone that needs a monitor or a PSU. Could be for POS systems or anything, you never know!

Thanks and good luck with your future scores. This came from 2 large gaylords (48x48x48). Only one of these monitors were in there. I fished quote a few 7th gen I-series Dell laptops with failed spinning HDD's and some smaller PC's out...the rest was the usual crap, keyboards/mice, printers, and cords....there were a bunch of proprietary analog telephones as well. I left all that stuff.

I finished off the modded PSU....not sure if I'd call this a 'proper' fix, but taking into account I couldn't find an OEM power supply for it, this was the best I could muster up. I won't use chinese knockoffs...had too many of them melt down on me. Never again....

Grille over the fan & sticker goo removed.

This PSU mod would be acceptable to me as a proper fix. It’s definitely not any worse than the original one. Point of sale stuff is always worth something!

Finally got around to testing this beyond just the signal generator. Perfect image quality in 1920x1200! Tested the touchscreen as well, it works.

            Excellent save!
24" with touchscreen is not something common, so it was very well worth it. Actually, this panel is probably quality enough to have been worthy to save even if it wasn't a touchscreen. I bet it looks nice and crisp at 1920x1200. On that note, 16:10 is a better AR IMO compared to 16:9... though personally, I'm still quite happy with 4:3 and 5:4. Too bad high-resolution and large size 4:3 and 5:4 screens are hard to find... and really non-existent past 21" AFAIK.

Also, I really like the reuse idea with the scrap Powerman PSU. Goes to show one should never scrap a good working PSU, especially the smaller and more funky form factor ones.

Magnum IA.100 Amplifier Switches on, No Output, Possible Input Side fault?
              by flibidy
I have here a Magnum IA.100 which belongs to my parents.

The unit powers on & when the relay kicks in, you get a pop from the speakers (this might sound weird but is usual behavior for this amp). However, you get nothing coming through it from any of the inputs & no pops and crackls from any of the controls.

Because of the sound from the speaker when the amp turns on I have assumed that the output section probably works but I could be wrong & I'm not sure how to test that side of things further.

LG 55LN5710 backlight diffuser sheet order
              by Lee M.
Hello all, new member here. I replaced the LED strips and found that the BL can be turned on with the TCON board and LCD panel disconnected. So new LED strips are working fine. Now the problem. There are 3 diffuser sheets on this set. One sheet is thicker than the others and I know it goes in first next to the LED strips. But one side of this sheet has a rougher texture than the other side. Does the rough side go up or down? The 2 thinner sheets have tabs that will only allow them to be installed one way so that's good. One sheet is what I would call plain translucent. The other sheet is whiter...

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!
              by momaka
I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

              60LN5600 white reflective sheet
              by lfhlaw
So I had to replace the LED lights on this TV and that worked out nicely. But the White reflector sheet that helps to diffuse the led lights evenly was glued into the back chassis which had to be removed to replace the LEDs.

Placing the white reflector sheet caused it to not sit evenly - causing weird diffusing when TV was all put together. Picture is still decent, but now there are dark and light spots due to the white reflector sheet not sitting against the back chassis.

Anyone have thoughts on replacement white reflector? or do I just scavenge broken TVs for...

              Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....
