    I'm not confused. Increasing ESR in a cap will increase the losses in that cap. Period.

    The Ripple that doesn't go through the cap goes through the IC [load].
    Less through the cap -> more through the load.
    Not sure why you can't comprehend that. It's simple.
    It all is. But I'm still unclear why YOU are consused about the increase in ESR resulting in an increase in dissipation in the cap.

    Psst - Ripple is AC.
    ESR doesn't affect the DC.
    DC is irrelevant to a discussion about Ripple.
    ESR doesn't 'care' if the DC is 5v or 500v.

      1 - It reduces it -in the cap- installed.
      2 - If you increase ESR it's not -THAT- cap anymore, you changed the cap.

      2 - As I said, a cap with higher ESR will have less ripple current going through it.

      Less current through cap, same volts, less watts. -> less heat.

      It's called Ohms Law.

        I'm not sure whether you are being deliberately obtuse, argumentative for the hell of it, or just plain don't follow. I believe everyone is worth some effort to enlighten them, so here goes. I'll give it this one last go to explain why you're mistaken. Please try to keep up - I'll go through it slowly.

        The ripple (AC) output of a switcher is a CURRENT SOURCE. The ripple current is directly related to the DC load current. So in a working piece of equipment (e.g. monitor) where the DC load is established, the ripple current is substantially constant.

        The low-ESR filter caps are designed to shunt the overwhelming majority of that ripple current. As I explained in post#16, as the ESR rises with deterioration of the cap(s), the current through the cap(s) doesn't reduce by anything like the same proportion, and the I²R losses in the cap(s) rise. Refer again to the sample numbers in that earlier post#16 to understand why.

        If you are having trouble understanding this, I suspect you are beyond comprehending something that is fairly basic.

            I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

            Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

            I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

            The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

            With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

            First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

            I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

            I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

            I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
            I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...

            This Samsung combined power supply and inverter was replaced a while ago from a Samsung 37inch LE37B530P7W TV. However I would like to repair this one.
            I have replaced the Mosfets Q1820 and Q1821 ( FDPF7N50U) which were both blown and the fuse FM802S. The schematic for this power supply that is attached doesn't relate to this power supply as the driving transistors and diodes are D1830, D1831, D1832, D1833, Q1811 & Q1810 are nowhere on the schematic!
            Does anyone know what the components for D1830, D1831, D1832, D1833, Q1811 & Q1810 should be? I ask as I did change the Mosfets...

            Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply

            I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

            One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...
