    Powering on OLD stereo

    Joined the forum today.

I have a Pioneer SX-1050 receiver from 1976. It has not been powered up for at least 15 years. I have heard of a few ways to start it up.

    1. Turn it on and hope for the best.
    2. Plug it into a variac and crank up the voltage slowly
    3. Plug into a current limiting device like a Christy tester.

I don't think number 1 is wise. I also hear solid state devices don't like variacs.

Not having a Christy what else are my options? The caps are 39 years old. I am a little concerned.

    Re: Powering on OLD stereo

I would build a dim bulb tester and try it out on that.

With solid state I've yet to have anything burn up that wasn't previously dead with just plugging it in without a variac, however a dim bulb tester is useful for testing for shorts in the power cord and similar areas.

If it turns on (no pops or sizzles or anything like that) then grab a multimeter and check for DC on the outputs and the dc offset on the speaker terminals. This here will help check if you're speakers are safe from DC voltage which isn't a good sign to have, a couple millivolts max.

If you don't have a multimeter on hand just grab something to use as an input (a phone with a 3.5mm to RCA adapter works fine) and stick a sacrificial speaker on, hope for the best. If you get sound at all, woot!

Now, odds are your controls are going to be staticy, as in you turn volume\balance\etc and a channel cuts in and out, has static, quiets down, etc. This here's dirty pots and switches. For this you'll need contact cleaner, alcohol based works best and non-lubricating is even better. I myself use Faderlube and Deoxit. Use your favorite contact cleaner on the switches. Spray some in and toggle\spin them a few times, maybe for 30 seconds or so. With the pots use the faderlube and do the same. The thing about deoxit is it's known that it can eat the carbon traces in the pots, rendering it useless. I've personally used D5 in pots before with no issues, but anything with deoxit in pots is on you.

After all that you'll probably have some lamps to replace if you want for prettyness but it'll be good to go. Just note that sometimes they liked to wire lamps in series rather than parallel so if one burns out all the front go out; Kenwood was especially good at it.

I've personally used this method on a bunch of old receivers, such as Harman Kardon 330B, Kenwood KR-6160, KR-4070, KA-5700, Sansui G5000, etc and never had an issue.

Now, if something goes pop, it doesn't do anything, etc post back with results from that. It's hard to diagnose everything right off the bat that may be wrong as so much could go wrong.

LG 55UH6150- trouble powering up, then half lit screen (pictures!)
      by valvashon
The 55" LG has been in the basement for a few months without being used. Turned it on yesterday, set came on as it should and showed a complete screen for about 5 seconds (was on a broadcast channel but no antenna was connected), then the screen went mostly dark with about 1/3 of the screen on the right lighting up with brighter lines in that lit part (sorry, no pictures of that). Power LED was cycling too, preventing the TV from fully powering up.
Pulled the back off, all boards looked OK. Pulled the LED connector, turned the set on to see if it would power up but I don't belive it...

Kenwood KR-6030 vintage stereo ,Old Man Trying to Save a Buck
      by DrDos
Hello all. I'll try to keep this short. I have no knowledge of electronics. I can use a multimeter and am familiar with caps to some extent. I bought a Kenwood KR-6030 vintage stereo. It need work and so I thought I would recap the thing since I get power to the on switch but nothing else is working. No lights, no sound and so forth. I went to Mouser to order caps and I find I am way over my head. I not only do not know the type of capacitors I need but Mouser and digikey do not accept Kenwood part numbers. I have the info such as 220uF 63v and such but no place to put it. I could buy a recap...

Asus 2021 ROG Strix G17 G713 not powering on and not charging.
      by DarKHawK
      Hi,

I have an Asus 2021 ROG Strix G17 G713 that is not powering on and not charging. Board number is G533-6050A3250201.
When plugged in, I found that the 3.3v/5v regulator was getting extremely hot, so I removed, next I found a short on the 3.3V rail. Removed the two 3.3v mosfets and found one of them shorted, but still the short on the rail did not clear. Then I injected voltage at that rail, and found out that U60400 the 2.5v rail was also getting hot. Removing it changed the short from 0 ohms to about 5-6 ohms, then I remove a bunch of other suspect components but that did...

Strange! Acer laptop not powering on but charging the battery (orange light on when charger and battery plugged in).
      by serious_electron
      Hello Everyone!

I have an Acer Aspire A315-42 laptop. I generally leave it on for long time by closing down its lid (so it enters the sleep mode). Recently, it rained quite heavily in out area. And the humidity and moisture seem to be high. So one late evening, after I opened the lid and turned on the laptop, it did power on as the blue light turned on but after it booted to the desktop screen, just 5-10 seconds after both the screen and blue light went out and laptop shut down (the blue power light turned orange). And after 2-4 seconds that orange light went off and the laptop died.

Add Stereo Input To Hi-Fi (Sony SONY PMC 107L)
      by Tarot Superstars
      Hi.
I bought a Cheap HIFI to use as my PC output and speakers and forgot to check if it had an input. It doesn't.

Is there any way to add a stereo input. I have a bunch of Phono sockets I am not using.
Where in the circuit is the best place to solder the 3 stereo input wires?

This is the model and schematics:
