    Buzzing guitar amp

Not too long ago, we found my sister's old guitar amp. Upon powering it up, it soon became clear there was something wrong with it. A full-volume 50hz buzzing was coming out of the speaker at all times, and turning the volume control did not have any effect on the sound. I could very faintly hear the input signal coming out of the speaker as well as the buzzing, and that WAS affected by the volume control - however it was hard to stay near the amp when it was making that loud buzzing!

We've thrown out the amp now (so I can't get the make and model), but I wondered if any of you guys had an idea what caused the buzzing noise? It was similar to the noise you get when you touch the other end of the guitar lead. Also, why was the buzzing not affected by the volume control? Could it be that the amp is always running at full-volume and the volume dial just attenuates the input?
You know there's something wrong when you open your PC and it has vented Rubycons...

check defectives capacitors commonly electrolytic caps..
replace the volume master or check it by multimeter if it is good
        check loose solder...

The problem is either a defective smoothing capacitor or more likely a bad solder join on one of them. Pity you threw it out.. it is and easy repair.

Sony HCD-HX80R Amplifier Volume Control Problem
            by crackedprint
I have a strange fault on a Sony amplifier. The volume control varies the display from MIN, then 1 up to 30 and then MAX as expected. At MIN there is no sound. However, at 1 it is quite loud and increasing above 1 does not change the sound level.

I have tried a Cold Reset as per the service manual.

I have looked at the I2C clock and data to volume control chip IC501 (BD3499FV). Data is only sent to IC501 when the volume is set to MIN or 1. At any other setting no data is sent to IC501.

I have looked all the way through the service manual and tried many online...

Onkyo TX-SR607 replacement volume control encoder
            by redwire
I had an Onkyo SR607 with a volume control encoder not working, turning the knob up the volume number would move around crazy and not work reliably.
Took it out and apart and no, it's not oxide or cleaning, lube required etc.- the metal is simply worn out. It's a 30mm part with metal bushing.

Volume control encoder Onkyo P/N 25065655W, Alps EC12E2425 is some oddball variant I could not find. I did the dig and tried replacement part Alps EC12E2420803 and it works/fits just like the original. Mouser 688-EC12E2420803 for $3.00

Cambridge Audio azur 540r volume control problem
            by madan1
            Hi everyone.

I have a Cambridge Audio azur 540r and face the following problem - from time to time the volume can be set only to VOL MIN and VOL MAX ( from both the volume knob and the remote ).

The volume control IC is BD3816K1 and it is controlled by the CPU M5964C40J.
The volume knob VOL_A and VOL_B signal enters the CPU and is processed to VOL_DATA and VOL_CLK which go straight to the volume control IC ( I believe the remote control signal also goes the same way ).
            The CPU is powered by a stand-by transformer with constant +5V ( 7805 ).
            The VOL IC

Simple volume control for audio amplifier ?
            by Dannyx
Good day folks. I want to run a Bose subwoofer and some random speakers on my PC at home. I don't have an amp for this project yet and I was looking for decent solutions and I figured I could very well run them on a car amp. Why not a regular hi-fi amp ? I figured a car amp would fit better under my desk. I looked at a Sony XMN1004 which is relatively affordable, yet of decent enough quality and with good reviews overall. Conveniently enough, this Bose Acoustimass 5 Series II sub (what a name) I have has two drivers inside, each with its own separate terminal, so I can hook it up to the Sony...

Marantz SR5007 popping on volume change and mute in Direct Mode
            by BigOof
            Hi,

I bought a used Marantz SR5007 and it's giving me some issues that I can't seem to really place. It functions well in most settings, ARC mostly works, it has no issues driving my speakers in any of the digital input modes, but I'm having issues running analog inputs in direct or pure direct mode. For some reason in this mode there's distortion for every volume increment I give it, but once the volume is stable it has no issues. Muting creates a loud pop, switching to another source also causes a pop and so does turning off the amp in that mode. Again, no issue in the digital modes....
