Simple volume control for audio amplifier ?

Good day folks. I want to run a Bose subwoofer and some random speakers on my PC at home. I don't have an amp for this project yet and I was looking for decent solutions and I figured I could very well run them on a car amp. Why not a regular hi-fi amp ? I figured a car amp would fit better under my desk. I looked at a Sony XMN1004 which is relatively affordable, yet of decent enough quality and with good reviews overall. Conveniently enough, this Bose Acoustimass 5 Series II sub (what a name) I have has two drivers inside, each with its own separate terminal, so I can hook it up to the Sony as shown either in panel J or in panel K of the manual.

Trouble is this setup would have no volume control, since the amp expects the headunit to handle that, so instead of having to mess around with my PC's volume setting all the time, I thought I could make my own with some pots. I have a stereo Alps pot in my parts bin which I got for a different project which never saw the light of day, so that should be adequate here. I also thought of adding a "balance" control, so I came up with this doodle.

OK I know what I did there is actually NOT "balance" control by any means (rather individual channel volumes for the "front" outputs). The thinking behind this is the amp itself already has gain controls for the front and rear channels on it, so VR2 and VR3 after the master Alps pot (VR1) would serve to trim the two satellite speakers in case my ears feel one is louder than the other, but without affecting the rear channels which drive the sub. I'd set the sub volume with the trimmer on the amp itself and it'd still go up/down when VR1 is turned...I THINK. I don't have the amp yet anyway to experiment, so I thought I should discuss my idea in the meantime, so my choice of amp here is not really important at this point - it's the pot arrangement I'm curious about, because I know there's a lot going on behind a pot, esp. in audio applications. It could even apply to those Aliexpress amp modules Cheers.

Sony HCD-HX80R Amplifier Volume Control Problem
    by crackedprint
I have a strange fault on a Sony amplifier. The volume control varies the display from MIN, then 1 up to 30 and then MAX as expected. At MIN there is no sound. However, at 1 it is quite loud and increasing above 1 does not change the sound level.

I have tried a Cold Reset as per the service manual.

I have looked at the I2C clock and data to volume control chip IC501 (BD3499FV). Data is only sent to IC501 when the volume is set to MIN or 1. At any other setting no data is sent to IC501.

I have looked all the way through the service manual and tried many online...

Cambridge Audio azur 540r volume control problem
    by madan1
    Hi everyone.

I have a Cambridge Audio azur 540r and face the following problem - from time to time the volume can be set only to VOL MIN and VOL MAX ( from both the volume knob and the remote ).

The volume control IC is BD3816K1 and it is controlled by the CPU M5964C40J.
The volume knob VOL_A and VOL_B signal enters the CPU and is processed to VOL_DATA and VOL_CLK which go straight to the volume control IC ( I believe the remote control signal also goes the same way ).
    The CPU is powered by a stand-by transformer with constant +5V ( 7805 ).
    The VOL IC

Denon AVR-X3600H No sound even to pre outs in direct analog mode. Help please!
    by FuzzyOwl
Hi, I have a Denon AVR-X3600H I'm trying to repair. I have no electronics repair experience but I have a multimeter, service manual and a will to fix it (https://device.report/m/d5de8c00e617...f63147aba9.pdf)

Everything seems to work except for no sound even through the pre outs. However I will get sound using Zone 2 pre outs.

Only digital symptom I can tell is it will soft lock when in the Speakers/Test Tone menu and be unable to adjust +/- db during the test tone.

I've followed the trouble shooting guide, audio check...

Marantz SR5007 popping on volume change and mute in Direct Mode
    by BigOof
    Hi,

I bought a used Marantz SR5007 and it's giving me some issues that I can't seem to really place. It functions well in most settings, ARC mostly works, it has no issues driving my speakers in any of the digital input modes, but I'm having issues running analog inputs in direct or pure direct mode. For some reason in this mode there's distortion for every volume increment I give it, but once the volume is stable it has no issues. Muting creates a loud pop, switching to another source also causes a pop and so does turning off the amp in that mode. Again, no issue in the digital modes....

Onkyo TX-SR607 replacement volume control encoder
    by redwire
I had an Onkyo SR607 with a volume control encoder not working, turning the knob up the volume number would move around crazy and not work reliably.
Took it out and apart and no, it's not oxide or cleaning, lube required etc.- the metal is simply worn out. It's a 30mm part with metal bushing.

Volume control encoder Onkyo P/N 25065655W, Alps EC12E2425 is some oddball variant I could not find. I did the dig and tried replacement part Alps EC12E2420803 and it works/fits just like the original. Mouser 688-EC12E2420803 for $3.00
