Ampeg PF-350 bass amplifier head repair

    Hello everyone!

I recently bought a broken Ampeg Portaflex PF-350 bass amplifier head in unknown condition. As it turns out, it's completely dead. Tried powering it on with the dim bulb tester, dead short.
I have attached the schematic below.
    What I found:
TH1 is cracked visibly but measures 6 ohms. Will replace it but should be okay for testing for now.
Either Q1 or Q2 was dead shorted. Don't remember which one but one of them. Both are FQPF12N60C. I replaced both with SiHP18N50C to test as I had these on hand. They are the same package, pinout, mosfet type. Slightly lower Vds but lower RDSon and higher current.
One of the output mosfets (IRFB4227) was dead shorted. Removed both for now. Also removed IRS20957S as it's most likely bad as it's VCC resistor R143 4R7 was also blown.
    No other visible damage.
Checked also bridge rectifier, diodes D15 and D18, checked for shorts across +-55V rails and low voltage rails, nothing.

With this done, I powered it up with a dim bulb tester again. Low power PSU comes on. Fault light is on on front panel. High current PSU makes a slow ticking noise and fails to start. 100W bulb in series, bulb is dim and every time the PSU ticks, it glows very slightly for a fraction of a second. I tried 250W worth of bulbs as some Behringer/Turbosound PSUs I have repaired in the past with the same KA3525A controller did not want to start with a 100W current limit. Heatsink with Q1, Q2 and bridge rectifier gets quite hot, both with 100W and 250W limit. Eventually, Q1 and/or Q2 will fail shorted again.

I have ordered new IRFB4227s, new IRS20957S and new FQPF12N60Cs as well as a few other things.

Any ideas what to check? Could the problem have been the SiHP18N50Cs? Bad KA3525A? I have one on hand and I can replace it. But it seems unlikely to fail as it's isolated from Q1 and Q2 via T2?

Thank you in advance if anyone has any ideas!

I ordered new Q1 and Q2, once I receive them and have them installed I will scope pin 10 and post a picture here

Slightly lower RDSon? Cutting RDSon in half isn’t slightly lower. While you can monkey a bit around with RDSon, cutting it in half spells trouble.

Amplifier - bad sound when loud sound on bass
          by eduaqa
I'n trying to fix a M&S SYSTEM DMC-1which have following problem:
I'm using FM station to do this fix, I works perfect if volume below around 8 or if bass is set to zero, the sound can go to 20 without problem, but if I set bass to maximum and try to go over 10 the sound comes distorted ... I saw a video on YouTube the person saying about the main capacitors on the power portion, but I disconnect the main transformer and inject direct to the capacitors PINs my bench power supply -23v 0v +23v, but still distorted so I think the problem is not the capacitor neither the transformer...

RCA WHP141 wireless headphones wired up
          by momaka
OK, this one dates back to 2015! I thought I had posted this, but realized I didn’t when I posted a picture of something else. So here it goes…

Back in 2015, I bought a pair of RCA WHP141 wireless headphones at Micro Center for $2. I even mentioned it in the best cheap/free scores thread right here. Just forgot to follow up with that.

As mentioned back then, these are (were) 900 MHz FM wireless headphones. No modern day Blutooth or anything like that. I knew they wouldn’t be great headphones or even that good… but the price was right! So let’s take...

Polk Audio RTi100 Plate Amplifier won't power on and intermittently honks and buzzes
          by MrCommunistGen
My childhood best friend was killed about 9 years ago. His parents are finally letting go of his things, and they offered me his Polk RTi100 tower speakers. The Polk RTi100 towers are one of a handful of designs from the early 2000s that is a full range 3-way tower with a built-in self-powered subwoofer. This is accomplished with a plate amp integrated into the speaker input panel.

I think they used them for a while, but they've been sitting for at least a few years now. After about 40 hours of driving to their house and back (both they and I have moved in the last 9 years) I got...

How to test Subwoofer Amplifier with only a multimeter
          by jinu_j
          Hi Folks

Need some advice on how to test a subwoofer amplifier if i have access to only a multimeter.

          Problem
I have a Boston Acoustics active Subwoofer (soundware S). Its rated output is 200W. But the output i am getting is very low i can barely hear/feel it even if put the gain at max. I replaced all the capacitors in the Subwoofer amplifier but still no change.

Is there anyway to test this without getting an oscilloscope/Function generator to see if the fault is with amplifier, driver or the source??

          Any advice would be appreciated...

          Mackie CR4 amplifier no sound
          by UserXP
          Hi, people.

I've got an amplifier assembly from Mackie CR4 parts. It's just an amplifier, there was no speaker housing, so I used my set of CR4s to test it.

Anyway, upon connecting everything and hooking the "new" amplifier to an audio source, the sound played clearly and strongly for the first ten seconds. I was happy it was working. Then the sound started to fade out during the playback until it was no more. After it had "dropped to zero", there were two very short intervals of sound playing at the normal volume, as if the amplifier was trying to...
