    Creative CT5320B SoundBlaster MCV Recap (microchannel)

    Here's somewhat of an oddity that I recapped. It came with mostly Rubycon and a few Gemicons. All of the caps -- even the good ones -- were beginning to leak from their bungs, so everything was replaced. Unfortunately collectors don't know how to fix these cards and leave them in a catastrophic state.

    A much better output section (overrated the 100uF decoupling cap to 220uF, there's only one due to the fact OPL2 is mono):

    The Yamaha OPL2 chip originally had a sticker placed on top it for twofold reasons: #1 at the time a lot of OPL2 chips were covered up or had their logos melted, my guess is to hide the fact they came from Japan. #2 Creative didn't want to show they used 3rd party chips for their main synthesis and as previously mentioned, didn't want to advertise a Japanese company on their product like what some American companies did.

    Here you can see how (lazy?) Creative was with the microchannel card edge connector:

    The majority of the teeth don't go to any traces, and they didn't even bother to add teeth on the second notch; most likely due to the fact the card is still 8-bit internally, and microchannel is 16-bit. The socketed CHIPS IC is what performs the ISA to MCA conversions. This is essentially a SB 2.0 with a quick wrap-over... despite looking quite different.

    Also, this card has *nice* wide open vias, and a strong solder mask. It was a dream to work on. One of the easiest recappings I have ever done, if not the easiest. It'll be fun to mess around with when I have some free time...

    That's a nice classic piece of hardware there. Glad you saved it like you did.

    Interesting to see old caps like that leak (even the Rubycons). I've seen much older hardware with both small and big Rubycon and other Japanese caps all still working fine.

      EDIT: Nevermind, I see that the pictures are from the recapped board, not the board with the prior capacitors.

        Well it's actually caused from a bung manufacturing difference. Some vintage capacitors hold the electrolyte in better than others. Panasonic for example made some terrible bungs 30 years ago. The rubber probably decomposed allowing the fluid to leak out.

          ^ Yeah, I guess you are right about that. Nichicon PL (and a few other series from the early 90's, too) had problems with leaking from the bungs.

          Most old Japanese caps are still pretty good, though. I trust them more than the fake or no-name garbage sold on eBay.

            ASUS P5GC-MX motherboard recap
            by momaka
            Here’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
            This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.

            So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

            no-name Radeon 9600 XT recap and cooler

            I've been seeing a lot of cheap-looking (but not always so cheap) no-name AGP video cards on eBay for a while. They started popping up quite a bit when the market for AGP cards became more alive all of a sudden due to interest in “retro” PCs. One thing that struck me about these cheapo cards is that they almost always seem to come with garbage caps - including the abominable Sacon FZ. That aside, though, I've been wondering about the rest of the quality (or lack of?) on these cards. So I decided to satisfy my curiosity yet again.

            This one was actually suggested to me by ChaosLegionnaire....

            what i went through dealing with my mobo with dead onboard sound!
            by ChaosLegionnaire
            so i took out one of my spare gigabyte ep35-ds3r mobos from storage for use to do some cpu, ram and video card testing of stuff i bought from ebay and got for free from momaka. he bought 50 e8400 cpus for cheap from ebay some years ago and i decided to help him relieve him of some of his supply since he had waaaay too many!! what did we say about hoarding too much stuff and depriving others of them?! *cough* socialism *cough* lol!

            i had to blow some dust off the board and heatsinks with the datavac as i didnt clean it up before putting it in storage. after finishing...

            Recap motherboards :: Abit KG7-LITE and Soltek SL-75FRN2-L
            by Foetuss
            Hi all

            Hope this is in the correct place.

            I'm planning on recapping both motherboards. I actually already ordered recplament caps for them, where I will be changing out most for poly's.
            Could use some double checking to see if I'm not doing something stupid .

            Pictures of the boards are attached.
            What I will be replacing with what : (planned)

            Soltek Golden ::
            4 1500µF 16V 10mm (5mmL) KZG => APSG160ELL152MJ16S (Chemi-Con 1500µF 16V)
            6 3300µF 6.3V 10mm (5mmL) KZG => APSG160ELL272MJ20S (Chemi-Con 2700µF 16V)...
