    Akai Stereo Amp AM 2450

    Hi

I recently bought a 1979 model Akai AM 2450 stereo amplifier and AT 2450 Tuner. When I turn it on in the morning the lights on both the power output dials flicker for a few seconds and then I hear a click. This might happen 1-2 times before it stays steady. If the turntable is turned on before the light steadies, the sound will cut off when it is flickering. Once it gets past this stage, it works fine. Is that a defect?

    Thanks for your advice.

The lights on the power output dials, according to the service manual, are actually one lamp - is that the one flickering?

I'm attaching the service manual, for what it's worth

The amp "mechanical" part diagram and list are on pages 46-47. The schematic is on page 56. That "backlight" lamp is on the bottom of the schematic, IND901, supplied from an auxiliary winding on the main transformer. The part list says it's a "Lamp (Cord Type) 8V 300mA (600mmx2)".

Thanks for responding. That makes sense as the flickering is the same on both the dials. It is almost like there is not enough power generated. The sound also cuts off while this happens. Once it is "warmed up", in less than half a minute, it works fine from then on.

Hmmm... 1979 would indicate the main power supply filter caps are almost definitely dried out (and well out of spec), but that shouldn't affect that bulb, since it's on a separate winding.

It might be worth pulling them out and testing them, or just straight replacing them from the get-go. It most definitely can't hurt, although i'm not sure how much suitable replacements cost

I replace the old incandescents with led's. Keeps the heat down.

            Hi

I have a careful look. The lights on the dials as well as the power on LED flicker. When its done there is a definite click and then it stays steady. Only then will the sound come on. SO its not a problem with the bulbs but something else inside.

Replacing the bulbs with LEDs is an interesting thought. Is that easy? I have no used a soldering iron in 30 years!

Some people on ebay are selling replacement bulbs with led's in them. Don't know if their any good. I made my own. Using plain jane led's from Mouser. Don't know what yours uses but I could probably help if you want to try, or just order some from ebay.
