    Accuracy probably doesn't matter so much because the soldering iron will be affected by ambient temperature, tip size, etc so as long as the temperature is within 5-10 degrees it's good enough. There's nothing stopping you from using it as-is, really, unless the incorrect numbers on the dial bother you.

    The only problem I'd think of is if the infra-red meter goes high enough to measure those temperatures, and also, they don't do too well measuring shiny surfaces, I believe.

    You are probably better off getting https://www.ebay.com/itm/Digital-Dis...-/232021156032
    or http://www.ebay.com/itm/TM902C-LCD-K...-/182298100727 would probably work fine too.

    The only way it's going to cause damage is if the heater you're using can draw more current than the triac or transformer in the station can supply. I would be surprised if that were the case, though.

    In a professional environment you would be expected to re-calibrate the iron when replacing the heater or other parts, sometimes even just swapping the tips, so re-calibration is nothing to worry about.

      So is it the sensor in the heater that throws off the temp read out?

      I'm curious if I'm able to melt solder at a lower temp readout, what would happen if I maxed the temp dial? Would the station draw more than it's designed to or?

        Most likely to be the sensor I expect, but who knows with cheap Chinese stuff! If you re-calibrate it for the new sensor\heater then there should be no problem, regardless.

        The heater can only draw as much power as it draws. If it was drawing more current than it should then this would be a problem no matter where the dial was set. (overload the transformer\triac)

        I would be more worried about it overheating and ruining the tip or shortening the lifespan of the heater, it if you turned the dial up too far, because the station thinks that the heater is colder than it actually is.

          The best way to drive a heating element?
          by EasyGoing1
          I've got this circuit that I've been playing with on a breadboard. I'm not happy with it mainly because the MOSFET gets too hot and generally controlling the temp of the heating element with the Arduino has proven to be a little more cumbersome than I would like.

          What I would like to know, is what is the best way to set up a circuit like this? The heating element is just a PCB and its going to be mounted under a 3D-printed enclosure that a lizard will use to warm his belly.

          This is the general setup that I have now.

          This is what the...

          Hp Lh482p 5 short 3 long short after cpu vcore mosfet replacement
          by jm942
          Hi,
          My laptop went dead and after checking ,the main 19 volt power rail was shorted. After some checks i could identify that a high side vcore mosfet was shorted.
          I replaced the mosfet and now the white powerled is present , fans start spinning but capslock shows the famous 5 long and 3 short code.

          I checked the vcore voltages after replacement and i get for all 1.01 V so means for me that the driver is still working of the replaced shorted mosfet. On the Nvidia i measure around 0.8 V after the mosfets.
          I did voltage injection on the cpu with 0.7V and i have a current...

          Replacement caps ok? (smoothing caps, PSU heating controller)
          by HectoPascal
          Hallo,
          i want to replace two smoothing caps from a heating controller PSU. They are probably 30 years old and it might be time to replace them.

          SXE 470uF 63V 105°C (tested: 472uF 0.35Ohm) --> Nichicon VY 105°C - 463uF 0.15Ohm
          SXE 470uF 25V 105°C (tested: 422uF 0.63Ohm) --> Samwha K5A 85°C - 446uF 0.10Ohm (or Panasonic RAD FC 470/25 8mm)

          I couldn't find anything about 'SXE'. That's the only declaration on the caps. Edit: The top/bottom ident says Nippon CC.
          Nichicon should be 'VY' series (linked).
          I couldn't find anything about Samwha...

          A Central Air Heating Element, A PID and a Sauna
          by JayPoorJay
          What could go wrong...?

          I'm not sure if this is the right sub category or even the right forum but here goes,,,

          I'll just dive right in. I want to see if it's possible and what it would take to use a PID Controller (or 2) to run a central air conditioning heater element (the kind that goes into an air handler) and a small blower fan... The application is a DIY Sauna... Am I nuts? Mean, these components could be had for around 100 bucks.

          What do I need to be thinking?

          Of course I will go to Vevor and order one of their 200$ sauna heaters so I...
