Learn electronics kits gift idea - Any suggestions?

I'm curious if anyone has any experience with a hands on kit for learning about electronics/how each component works?

I see some on eBay but there's a lot of choices. I'm looking for something that doesn't use an arduino and can give a good understanding of the different relationships between resistors, caps, transistors, etc
