Re: Looking to build a somewhat simple variable voltage DC PS

    Actually built the powersupply.

It has a 25 amp bridge rectifier, and uses an LM396 variable voltage regulator, right now only the right 2 terminals are connected. at some point the other 2 will be for unregulated voltage. The only parts that were purchased were the LM396, the 5k pot, the heat sink, and the dc socket. Everything else came from a junk ups, or in the case of the 12,000uf 80v cap an audio amp. At some point I will add a volt and amp meter. It outputs 1 to 20 VDC at up to 10 amps.

      Looking good!

Remember that you can use one or several pass transistor(s) to beef up that regulator. I don't see why it shouldn't work with an LM396.

Any plans on adding current limiting? It should make that thing much more versatile for lab use.

edit: on a side note, I'd estimate that xformer is good for 200 or maybe 250 watts (if my eyes don't fool me).
That's not saying it won't put out much more for short periods of time.
can you tell us the numbers printed on it?

Actually it is good for at least 400 watts.
This is not the exact one but here is a pic of 2 from similar UPSs that I made an isolation transformer from:

"Netburst Mercedes" - a rather simple yet "exotic" build
          by Dan81
Figured I should make a own thread so as not to hijack Topcat's thread.

Just as the title says, this machine is basically a "Netburst Mercedes". From the case, all the way to the innards, IMO.

First, let's take a look at the specs:

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-8IG1000 Pro w/ FGx BIOS (special BIOS revision made by AGFA for their dlab.1 MPU machine.)
CPU: Pentium 4 HT 3.00GHz Prescott - will probably replace it with a Northwood HT as this Prescott is literally HELL incarnate. Wish I'd be joking, but it's absolutely true.
          PSU: revamped Deer/L&C...

simple win network with optimization issue
          by harp
simple win network with optimization issue I like to ask some question about configuring simple room win network. So, there is 2 win computer, android4 device and wifi router not connected to internet. The purpose is storage space and manipulation with large files between any device. 1 pc - 192.168.0.2 (winxp sp2) wired to router port#1 2 pc - 192.168.0.5 (win10, enabled smb1.1) wired to router port#2 3 router - 192.168.0.1 with dhcp for wifi (192.168.0.101...) 4 main tablet - 192.168.0.101 (android4) wified to router wifi port I generally work and control transfer with my tablet via ES3 file...

Asus X541UV Windows update KB5063060 deleting BootOrder EFI environment variable? bios fix
          by davidebeatrici
I had 3 people contact me in a week because Windows suddenly didn't boot:

As you can see, all 3 are ASUS computers, but I believe the common factor is the BIOS being American Megatrends (AMIBIOS/APTIO).

The first two recovered just fine after a restart, but the third one didn't and was brought to me. The model is F541UV (X541UV).
Setup allows to add a boot option manually and the operating system boots just fine from both bootx64.efi and bootmgr.efi. However, there is no way whatsoever to save the option(s): upon a reboot the machine goes straight...

          Steps i done and results:

I exported a clean bios from update file via pfs extract.

          1. Build clean bios with clean ME, PMC, PCH in flash image tool.
          Result: Dead

          2. Build clean bios with no changes in ME, new PMC, PCH
          Result: Dead

          3. Build old bios with clean ME, new PMC, PCH
          Result: The same
