Capacitor rating and substitution rules in motherboards and Graphics cards

I'm asking this because I read another topic https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=20791
and I see that capacitors of higher capacitance can adversely affect other components such as diodes in bridge rectifiers and similar components.

I work mostly on motherboards and video cards and that's why I'm asking specifically for those components. Now I'm not an electronics expert by a long shot but had great success with recapping. Sometimes what I do when I'm out of caps of certain uf value I substitute them with caps of higher value but never higher then 50% plus of the original and never had any problems doing so. For an example I just recapped an old 7300 GT with sacons and was completely out of caps so I salvaged some mobo caps with good ESR (measured). Original sacons were 5x1500uf 16v, 2x1000uf 6.3v and a single 470uf 6.3v. The replacements I used were 3x2200uf 16v Rubies ZL and 2x1800uf 16v Rubies MBZ for the 1500uf sacons, 2x1000uf Panasonics FM for the 1000uf and a 470uf 25v Pana FM. The card Runs extremely well, passed 25hrs of furmark without a hitch but can higher UF ratings give me problems in the future?
    Guns don't solve problems. I'll take 12

Re: Capacitor rating and substitution rules in motherboards and Graphics cards

Often boards using crappy caps are designed to take a wider range of uf and so on... because then the unpredictable caps won't make the board unstable.

Also bear in mind that caps can have a -+20% tolerance so a capacitor with 1000uf on it may well be up to 1200uf.

Is it no harm to replace with capacitor without ripple current rating?
      by chth96
When I tried to repair LG 29 inch CRT TV, I found that the ESR value of samyoung SMS capacitor(160v 2.2uf), which is very close to D1879 transistor, is 6 ohm.

Judging from above ESR Meter Table,I think It is necessary to replace this sms capacitor. So I visited local electronics shop, and I purchased 160v 2.2uf rubycon YK capacitor.
But when I browse through rubycon YK datasheet,I found that there is no ripple current rating for 160v 2.2uf specification. But On the contrary, I found 39 mA ripple current rating for 160v 2.2uf SMS capacitor.
      Rubycon YK DataSheet (b...

      Cyberpower 1500AVR UPS repair
      by quickname
I'd like to start out by thanking this forum for providing the info to be able to repair my 15 year old CP1500AVRLCD UPS. Here is all the info I gathered during my trouble-shooting and re-capping.

Like clockwork, I've had to replace the SLA batteries every 4 years. It was about that time and the UPS was acting like it needed new batteries... randomly shutting off with AC present, not being able to charge fully, and poor runtime when AC was removed. So, I replaced the batteries but noticed that it was not charging properly.

I decided to verify that the batteries were...

Replacing electrolytic caps by solid caps on old motherboards
      by madscientist750
I do have several old pc motherboards which i recapped 10 year ago and some of those caps are bulged now.
I would like to upgrade them using solid capacitors. I do use them for testing and helping some alternative operating systems.
I would like to ask if such an upgrade can be done, what should i have in mind when replacing electrolytic by solid caps and if such thing exist, if there are caps list for old motherboards. I would have to figure out what caps needs each motherboard and then prepare a list to try to ask for them on some electronics stores.

Dell Optiplex GX260 - Advice Needed for Polymodding Motherboard
      by SwedishDiesel
      Howdy folks,

I have an Optiplex GX260 that blew a couple of those troublesome Nichicon HM series (ultra low ESR) electrolytic capacitors. Because said caps are obsolete, they are pretty much impossible to find on the market; I did find a listing for some but I believe they are counterfeit. I feel the easiest thing to do would be to replace all the blown caps with polymer ones. I am by no means an expert in electronics, and I've found a fair bit of conflicting information, so any guidance or confirmation would be greatly appreciated. While from a practical standpoint it's not worth...

Dick Smith Q-1760 linear power supply filter capacitor question
      by Agent24
I have acquired a used Dick Smith Q-1760 power supply - although the OEM is Manson Industrial
It has at least one problem.

The voltage control potentiometer VR2, 50K is faulty - going high resistance / open circuit in the CCW end and leading to the output voltage jumping around.
I have already ordered a replacement potentiometer, so that's not an issue.

Now, I want to replace all three electrolytics on the PCB as they are CapXon and I don't trust them so much, I will replace them with something better while I've got the thing apart anyway.
      All are CapXon...
