    Two caps instead of 1 ?

    I'm having trouble finding a capacitor of the correct voltage for a panel repair. The original is an MKP 400vac 2uf. I can however get 250vac 2uf caps. Is it possible to join two of these together to give me 500vac but still retain the 2uf capacitance ? If so how would you suggest i do it? series or parallel....

      The only way to get the required voltage is to connect them in series, but if you do that, then the capacitance will be halved. So you will need 4.7uF capacitors.

      Connecting them in parallel wont work, as the voltage will remain at 250v, and the capacitance will be doubled.

              Still may not work, you need to check the ESR as well.

                  Do you have a picture of where the capacitor goes?
                  My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

                      This is the original cap removed from the board. It's only showing a capacitance of .5uf on the meter. I managed to find the exact one on uk-mouser but with a minimum buy of 265 units !!
                      Rant Time .... this is the 21st century and an otherwise perfectly good fridge freezer will be scrapped because of a £2 part that is unavailable to buy as a single piece.

                      Someone somewhere must have one of these, or an equivalent, but i'm ****** if i can find one.

                                  The price break is 800 pieces, not the minimum order.

                                              the ones at mouser are electrolytic and dc. I need 875vdc/400vac. I have found a good match B32674D8225K but nobody has stock.....just have to wait i guess or tell them to buy a new freezer...

                                                      Any chance you work/live near a appliance repair center? Maybe they have replacement caps or salvaged boards they pull parts off of. Not the most ideal solution, but maybe worth a try?

                                                                          Well ... you'll all be pleased to know that the freezer is working again...

                                                                          the two pics are before and after. I replaced the small triac too as it was sometimes giving dodgy readings.
                                                                          Fitted it today and the freezer fired up like a good un...

                                                                          Price for appliance man to come out and fit new module = £200
                                                                          Actual cost for parts and repair = £4.98

                                                                                  I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

                                                                                  I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

                                                                                  I have an Optiplex GX260 that blew a couple of those troublesome Nichicon HM series (ultra low ESR) electrolytic capacitors. Because said caps are obsolete, they are pretty much impossible to find on the market; I did find a listing for some but I believe they are counterfeit. I feel the easiest thing to do would be to replace all the blown caps with polymer ones. I am by no means an expert in electronics, and I've found a fair bit of conflicting information, so any guidance or confirmation would be greatly appreciated. While from a practical standpoint it's not worth...

                                                                                  I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

                                                                                  The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.
