Capacitor tester how usefull is such a tool?

    Hello,

ive heard of capacitor testers named ESR-Meter how useful are such testers.

For example i have an MSI KT4AV-L Mainboard(with Rubycon, Chemicon caps and one teapo) which stopped working, so I want to test them before recapping this board.

    thanks

ESR meters cost between $65 and $300. Unless you do this for a living, "blind" recapping everything is usually cheaper.

Most people here like Rubycon and United Chemi-con caps as per

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2280

However, United Chemi-con KZG are a problematic series.

PS. There are some build your own ESR meters. This topic has been discussed before and you can search for it.

as I have arround 10 boards and several PSU's with cap problems and not all are worth recapping them completely(I recap just for fun), I will buy one of those testers.

      thanks

I built one of the Blue ESR meters. I like it very much, and it was fun to build too!

It's also a good test of your soldering skill, if you fail to construct the meter you probably shouldn't be recapping (yet) ha ha....

I also built the Blue ESR meter and I've been pleased with it.

I just purchased a ESR-micro 4.0 and couldn't be happier it is very handy to have around in the month that I have had it it has paid for itself. I can't speak for the Blue meter I love the fact that Bob Parker is on this forum if i were to have a problem with it.

Capacitor detached from PCB – RTX 2070 Super Founders Edition

                  Title:
Capacitor detached from PCB – RTX 2070 Super Founders Edition

                  Description:
During maintenance on an RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition, I found a capacitor lying on my desk after reassembly.
I did not notice it detaching, so I am unsure of its original location on the PCB.

                  Procedure performed:
                  - Removed backplate
                  - Cleaned heatsink and PCB with isopropyl alcohol + soft ESD brush
                  - Reapplied thermal compound
                  - Reassembled card

                  Observed behavior after reassembly:
                  - GPU powers on and operates normally under...

                  Making a capacitor discharge tool
                  by redwire
I'm making a new capacitor discharge tool. Asking for suggestions for sizing the discharge resistor.
Mr. Carlson's Lab High Voltage Capacitor Discharge Tool 1 is using 4 of 1kΩ 50W aluminum (mount to heatsink) resistors in series for 4kΩ 200W, so it's big, which is fine.
His Patreon but I don't have a paid subscription for the project details but it looks straightforward. The plastic box with aluminum plate can't get rid of any amount of that heat though.
Wirewound resistors can be overloaded by a factor of 5 for 5sec. and a factor of 10 for brief times. I've never tried say...

                  RTX 3080 FE Identifying capacitor
                  by Prolog
Hi people, I hope this is the correct spot to post this, I'm new to the forum.

I have an RTX 3080 Founders Edition which has a burnt up capacitor (it was in parallel with another capacitor which appears damaged too), so I am hoping to be able to identify the capacitor values and order replacements.

I hope these photos make it clear which component I am referring to:
(yes, the soldering is a bit botched from removing the blown one, I know)

I have found the board schematic (attached), but there does not seem to be a boardview available. I have never...

Dick Smith Q-1760 linear power supply filter capacitor question
                  by Agent24
I have acquired a used Dick Smith Q-1760 power supply - although the OEM is Manson Industrial
It has at least one problem.

The voltage control potentiometer VR2, 50K is faulty - going high resistance / open circuit in the CCW end and leading to the output voltage jumping around.
I have already ordered a replacement potentiometer, so that's not an issue.

Now, I want to replace all three electrolytics on the PCB as they are CapXon and I don't trust them so much, I will replace them with something better while I've got the thing apart anyway.
                  All are CapXon...
