Panasonic TC-P60ST60 Plasma TV won't turn on, no LED

    Model: Samsung TC-P60ST60 Plasma TV

    SM Note:
When reviewing the Service Manual, both the S60 and ST60 series TV’s are covered. Don't confuse the S60 diagrams with the (appropriate for this TV) ST60 diagrams.

    Symptoms:
TV won’t power on; no Red LED Standby Indicator (and no blink codes).

Measurements in Standby (measured on P6, bottom left of Power Supply):
    P6-1 (Panel_Main_ON) = 0v
    P6-2 (S1) = 0v
    P6-3 (S2) = 0v
    P6-4 (STB5V_ON) = 0.173V
    P6-5 (STB5V) = 4.49V
    P6-6 (F15V_ON) = 2.79V
    P6-7 (GND) = n/a
    P6-8 (GND) = n/a
    P6-9 (F15V) = 15.72V
    P6-10 (F15V) = 15.72V
    P6-11 (GND) = n/a
    P6-12 (P15V) = 0V
    P6-13 (GND) = n/a
    P6-14 (15V_S) = 15.72V

    Observations:
Fuses are good, caps are good (not bulged, all tested good with in-circuit Capacitance meter).

Power supply is producing STB5V, mainboard is producing 3.3V, other necessary voltages are present. STB5V reads 4.49V which seems to be off more than a bit – is this too low to operate properly?

Issue seems to be related to the fact that the secondary 15V supplies should come on for 8-11 seconds, then be turned off while in standby - on this TV they are on all the time.

When the set is plugged in, I hear one click of the relay, there should be two clicks heard (1 as the 15V supplies are instructed to turn on, then a second click when those same supplies are shut off again. The Troubleshooting flowchart on Slide 86 of the Service Manual (“SM” - attached) says that if only 1 click is heard, the Power Supply (P Board) should be replaced.

However, the mainboard is what tells the PS to turn on the secondary supplies via the F_STBY_ON command being raised for approximately 8-11 seconds (Slide 21 of the SM) during which time the secondary supplies are turned on, then off again. On this set, F_STBY_ON is always present on Connector P6-Pin 6 so the Power Supply seems to be doing what it is instructed to do by the mainboard processor (IC8000).

I’d like to determine what next steps I can take to narrow the problem down to the either the Power Supply or Mainboard. I don’t really want to just shotgun it by buying boards until it works. I'd also prefer to fix the problem if it's a Power Supply issue rather than swapping boards. If it is the Mainboard (A board), then I'd look at fixing or replacing the board since some of the components are beyond my repair facilities.

I did read somewhere that one person said his TV with same exact symptoms turned out to be the IR sensor board, I guess that’s another possibility since the Standby LED is not on.

Just noticed I saved the images incorrectly - the attached images should be better.

Found a power supply on eBay - made no difference. At this point the A board (mainboard) is suspect. None of them on eBay though. I'll have to put this on the sidelines for a while.

Did you try forcing the PSU on to determine if the PSU was OK? If you look at Slide 86 from the file you attached and follow it CORRECTLY, it would point you to the correct diagnosis-it never lie/fails. I have followed those flow charts many, many times and they are always on the button. Suppose you bought a non-working PSU of e-bay?? It has happened to me already. More than once but I was able to self-test the PSU and determine if it was OK and got refunds for the bad purchase.

Thank you for responding, I'm a bit new to this but willing to learn.

Forcing the power supply on - I'd love to try that if you can tell me how. I have tried to accurately follow the troubleshooting flowcharts:

In regard to Page 86, I did get 1 click only. So I replaced the P board as the flowchart instructed. No difference was noticed and surprisingly, the replacement power board STB5V reads almost identical to my original supply (4.5VDC vs 4.49VDC) on Pin 5 of the P6 connector. I even thought maybe that was outside acceptable voltage tolerance, so I pulled Pin 5 from the connector and sourced 5.2VDC from an external supply to the A board. Also no difference.

I was thinking its the A board since it's holding F_STBY_ON high all the time (not just 8-11 seconds) and it appears that would cause the P board to be stuck in the initial Standby test cycle (see Slide 20).

Would love it to be the power supply since it would be easier to repair/replace than the A board.

How can I force it on? Since the A board is already holding P6-6 high, it looks like I only need to force PANEL_MAIN_ON?? Not sure how to do that or what voltage that would be 5V, 3.3V?

Thanks for the assistance, its very much appreciated.

Connect two (2) 120Vac 60W light bulbs in series and make attest light.
Disconnect all connectors from the PSU to the other boards.
On the P6 connector, connect a 1k resistor across the st-by5V pin and the stby-ON pin.
Connect another 1k resistor across st-by5V pin and the F-stby ON pin.
Connect another 1k resistor across st-by5V pin and the panel-main ON pin.
On the P2 connector, connect your test light across the Vsus pin and GND.
Plug the PSU into the ac.

If the test light glow bright and remain ON, measure Vda across P35 Vda pin and GND.
Measure the M5V, 17V and 12V and see if they are all there.
BE CAREFUL and not short out any connections and beware of an electric shock hazard.
If the PSU is good the test light will remain On and all your voltages are present it would be safe to say PSU is good.

Thanks, I'll round up parts. No more Radio Shacks here so I hope I have the resistors on hand (I think I do). M5 - do you mean 5V on the main board? I'll probably be able to post result later tonight or tomorrow.

When you have unplugged/disconnected all the connectors from the PSU so that it is separated from all the other interconnecting boards, to do the 'self-test, The M5V is generated and measured on the PSU.

Okay, That went pretty well, lights came on brightly. Voltages measured:

                  Vsus - 202.6
                  Vda - 55.0

                  (P6-1) Panel_Main_On - 2.6
                  (P6-2) S1 - 0
                  (P6-3) S2 - 0
                  (P6-4) STB5v_On - 2.3
                  (P6-5) STB5v - 4.5
                  (P6-6) F15V_On - 4.3
                  (P6-7) GND
                  (P6-8) GND
                  (P6-9) F15V - 15.72
                  (P6-10) F15V - 15.72
                  (P6-11) GND
                  (P6-12) P15V - 15.72
                  (P6-13) GND
                  (P6-14) 15V_S - 15.72

Not sure where you referenced the 12V from, I could find nothing in the Service Manual.
But - it looks like the Power SUpply checks out okay. I still wonder why the STB5V is low-ish at 4.5V?

Thanks again. I guess I'll have to deal with the A board now.

OK..That's great. I'm glad you understood the procedure to 'self-test'. Now we look at the Main Bd. Replace or Repair? I usually go for replace especially with PLASMAs.

Okay, I've received my repaired "A board" (mainboard) back from the good folks at PTS Electronics. Returned it to the set and it came right up as expected. Happy I was able to rescue this plasma Smart Tv for only the cost of the board repair and my time.

I didn't get much information from PTS - only that they had replaced some components on the A board.

Thanks for all your valuable help Andrew! I very much appreciate it.

Now if I can only figure out why Netflix refuses to work....(LOL).

I'm experiencing the exact same issue, but I'm not equipped to run most of these tests. Can anyone recommend an appropriate plan of action? I have the rear cover removed, and I'm capable of taking multimeter readings, but I don't have any components or sophisticated gear.

The flow chart indicates that I should replace the power supply board, but in this instance at least, that didn't help since the mainboard was incorrectly sending signals.

                            Thanks,

                            Laramie

                              Here are some recommendations:

                              (1) Be careful when you have the back off the set - lethal high voltages are present. Find a more experienced friend if you haven't done this before.

                              (2) See Post # 9, above. Make/edit a copy of it, and record each of the voltages on the pins. These are DC volts so set your meter accordingly.

                              (3) Start a new thread. Each set and problem is unique, it will be more helpful to others to have a separate thread for your specific issue (and the potential resolution).

(3a) As suggested at the top of the forum, take pictures of your set and post them in your new thread. Capturing board numbers is most beneficial. Even though your set may be the same model as mine, it is not unusual that they would be assembled with different models or revisions of boards, this is why the pics are important.

                              (4) Reread suggestion #1 and do not underestimate the risk.

Once you have the pics and voltages posted in your new thread, folks can start making observations and recommendations. Good luck!

Jumped in to late but indeed bad mainboard. You gave the answer yourself.

4.49v is normal , it is probably your meter. ( propes resistance ).
5v goes into mainboard turning on the 3.3v but also the 5stb ON signal which you dont have.
Maybe bad bga solder or storm damage?

                                These mainboards get very hot.
I only repair Panasonic plasma tv's! Currently owning a TX-P55VT50 and still searching for a ZT60!

                                  Hi,
anyone able to provide the service manual for old plasma Panasonic TX-P42ST50E?
It turns off almost immediately (0~5 seconds after pressing the on/off button) and starts flashing the red diode 6 times.
I disconnected the left-hand side board (SC?, both the ribbon cable and the power cable to it) and also another ribbon going to bottom left board. Then the led signal is 8 flashes. According to service guide to another Panasonic plasma it would mean the left-hand side board is faulty. But I'm not sure it 100% applies to my model.
I checked that board for any obvious faults...

Panasonic ZT60 plasma tv with strange behavior and 8 blink code
                                  by cloo
I recently got my hands on a 60" Panasonic P60ZT60 plasma tv (european model) that has some strange issues along with an 8 blink code.
It know this tv is getting old but it was once considered one of the best plasmas ever made, and i think it is still holds on to that even by todays standards.

So, long story short. When i first got the tv it had a very bright washed out picture with very raised blacks in all picture modes and i couldn't find the cause in the picture setting menus.
After doing a factory reset this problem was gone and the picture was back to...

Panasonic Plasma TH-50PZ85U No screen No blinks on red power light
                                  by Alicat
                                  Hello,

Stopped by this site trying to fix my parents Panasonic Plasma TV.

                                  Model number is TH-50PZ85U

Power comes on and the red power light stays on solid.

Did a few checks like hold the power button on for 60 seconds, hold the - Volume while holding the menu button, no luck, still@ blank grey screen as the screen lights up very vague.

I also hear a few clicks.

I also think my parents said there was a thunderstorm and the TV failed after that.

Section 6 in the service manual talks about power and no screen,...

Panasonic P42S30 Plasma - Pink sparkles
                                  by Lintesir
My parents' Panasonic P42S30 died recently, and they asked me to have a look at it. I was able to identify the SN-board as the culprit, as it was shorted. After removing Q401, Q402, Q421 and Q422 the short was gone, so I replaced these components and that got the TV working again. However, when testing the tv a bit, I noticed quite bad pinkish sparkles on some colors. For instance the greyish bar on this forum seems to trigger it quite badly. I made a fullscreen test picture with only that color, with the below result.

There is about a 5cm high region at the top without any sparkles,...
