    Bad default wireless network SSID

Today, I found something which should concern those with a Belkin wireless access point.

It was a Belkin access point with the SSID "secure_your_wifi" - I am not sure if it is a public one.

This could be a beacon for those wanting to gain free Internet access, or something worse!

Some people may not know that the SSID name may mean; they may not know how to secure it and may only upgrade their security software on each PC that accesses the network. Remember, firewalls are virtually useless against wireless intruders.
Many people with unsecured wireless access points have little or no understanding about wireless security until it is too late.
Fortunately, a friend of mine has some understanding, but only uses WEP (it keeps out all but the most determined intruders)

When I get my webpages up and running, it will include a list of wireless network security quotes (some adapted, others unique). Stay tuned...

Have anyone else seen a Belkin wireless network with the name "secure_your_wifi"?

That doesn't seem like a default ID. Also, wep is easy to crack no matter what password you use.

      that acually makes sense,
the user often does nothing to a router.

by doing that, they will see it when they configure the clients and *may* get the message.

Anyone sniffing around for wireless networks would instantly know if a network was secure or not whatever the SSID was.

sounds like some unauthorised person changed the ssid to make a point.

I use this list to find the default password for my routers (when I have to reset them).

Right after I log in I change the password to something else. Clearly this is not the default for that brand of equipment.

routerpasswords dot com seems to be a new site, I haven't checked them out yet.

Several months ago, my neighbor used my unsecured wifi until his AirPort stuff arrived (he's a Mac fanboi since the mid-1980s). I can trust him not to surf child porn, and we can laugh about it now, but yes, I should have secured it (I changed PCI wireless cards and such many times in just a few weeks and left it open).
