I've tried various Linux versions, and I'd love to be able to settle on one and use it instead of Windows. But, the sticking point is drivers that aren't included in the box. Not only that (as Windows has the same problems), but installing drivers is not as easy as it is in Windows. I've never had to drop to a command prompt to install a driver in Windows (well, at least not since Win98 or so).

I love Ubuntu and Kubuntu, but until I can install it and easily get my wireless card in my laptop working, I'll pass.

You had to learn Windows at some point.

Support for XP goes away in like 2-3 years I think.
You gonna suck-up learning Linux or paying for Windows ME-II (Vista)

If you run 32 bit programs in vista 64 try installing them as administrator, runing them as adiministrator, and also as xp compatiblilty mode.

It make a difference in some apps.

I haven't used MS support for XP at all, so it doesn't bother me if it goes away. I do understand what you are saying, though...

The real kiss of death for XP is when some dumbshit at Intuit (Quickbooks) decides XP is no longer supported. Intuit will force the business user to upgrade. I hope when they pull this stunt, they get such a backlash that they retreat.

I figure Intuit will play this card after Windows 7 is released.

          Windows products:
          CE
          ME
          NT

What's that spell: Windows CEMENT. Sinks you like a rock...

You're right... I did have to learn windows at some point. That point was a good many years ago, when I had all the time in the world, because I was in 7th grade...

I will play the "no time" card, because it's true. I can load up an XP machine, get it updated, and get AV and all drivers on it, in an hour and a half. I had ubuntu on my laptop for a week, and still couldn't get the Network Manager to work with a wired connection that requires static IP addresses. It simply wouldn't do it. The fix? Install WICD and use that to manage the network instead.

Okay, I'll do it, just 'cause I want linux to work. So I find out what repository it's supposed to be in, enter that into the update manager thing, and it says "nope, nothing there for you to install". So now I'm SOL. Why can't I just go to a page and double click on an executable??? AND, why doesn't ubuntu's network manager work right out of the box??? These are problems I might've run into with windows 3.11 for workgroups or win95. NOT problems that I should have to deal with when using an OS that's billing itself as a windows killer and the best thing since sliced bread.

            Rant. Off.

And let me just reiterate... I'm not an MS fanboy. These are just frustrations and observations I've come across in trying to move to a linux platform as my main OS. If I were a MS fanboy, I'd never give any flavor of linux a chance, much less attempt to replace XP with linux on my main PC.

                See why I use Fedora?

Although in general, if you're going to use static IP's, disable the network manager and just find the file, edit manually. Takes the guesswork out of it. Network manager is still hopelessly broken. I can't figure out why they choose to package that POS with otherwise good distributions.

                  Re: quick RAM lesson

That's my point... I shouldn't have to go in and edit the file manually. A GUI is supposed to do that for me. It's provided and doesn't work... how is that acceptable?

                    Re: quick RAM lesson

Well, Linux does come with a double your money back guarantee.

That's actually one of the strengths of Linux. You have access to all the guts of the OS. If the GUI tool f***s up, you can still make it work by changing a file. It's not hard. Everything in Linux is stored as a file, all the GUI tools do is change them for you.

So you are eventually getting Vista then.

                      Can't have it both ways.

At some point in the future unless you are NEVER going to upgrade your PC again you have to upgrade MS OS or switch.

I'm not trying to pick on you.
If I could use W2k forever I would, but that plan isn't gonna work.

I'm just saying the path you are following has an end to it in time and that end is approaching pretty fast.
                          .
Now is a good time to decide which way you will turn when you reach the end of the path.
                          - You have plenty of time now to 'learn new tricks' and use XP concurrently.
