    Re: fuck netgear!

The article recommends dd-wrt. Other alternatives include

    https://openwrt.org/
    https://lede-project.org/

I have used openwrt and switched to lede in 2017 as openwrt hasn't released an update in 18 months. I'm using the latest lede release 17.01.1.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

I concur....but FWIW, I've read tales of some major manufacturer system UEFI BIOS's embedded with firmwares that phone home...

BTW, for obvious reasons, I did alter the thread title to be a little more on target.

Wait, you run Linux with OSS drivers?

Because who knows what the vendor driver binaries do... (don't they already send crash info?)

I was wondering about tomato, it too (optionally) sends home data about its install...

                        yes.
i may not if it was a modern nvidia card - but it's not.
infact it's an amd gpu that is not even supported by the mfr anymore.
                        so i'm safe.

So no windows at all? I figured there's lots of windows only tools around which won't work properly through wine.

I finally got rid of fglrx on my main system...for a long time there was no better alternative for graphics performance. Alas even Firefox phones home though hacking it not to is still an option.

i have an old p3 laptop with xp for my eprom programmer.
it's never on any network and i move stuff in and out by usb-key.
                            *that* is the ultimate firewall!!

Not too far off... the nVidia Geforce Experience (installed by default with drivers) now requires login before you can use any of its features. Only one reason I can think of for that...

And then there's Samsung Magician, the SSD utility for use with Samsung drives, which has supposedly refused to update the firmware on one of their drives because the user didn't opt-in on being spied on.

And then there's Samsung (and other) smart TVs...

Wave of the future, everyone. The new normal is for everything to assume all our dataz are belong to them.
