I was in need of a new server and to my luck the local university was tossing two of theirs. One is a Dell PowerEdge 2400 and the other was an HP Proliant ML370 server. Anyways, before I got at it, someone had pulled all the drives, ram and the processors as well as took the SCA drive cage from the HP. The other thing that baffles me is that not only were the PSUs pulled but the slots they plug into inside the server were also removed. This for me at least really makes the parts list and thus the price longer. Is it still worth it to get replacement parts for at least one of these servers or should they be tossed off my deck and into the back of the car again? I am really interested how well Xeon processors perform for use in dedicated Steam servers (EG. Garrys Mod) and I should live for a while with just plugging the drives in sans their caddies.

check if VRM module taken from ML370
if you just have the case and boards then i wouldnt bother. i wont get a hp or any branded server again too expensive for parts
put the mobos on egay
What I'm really wondering though is why the HP has not only sockects for the Xeon processors but also two ZIF 370 sockets.Find Nedry!

Re: Two new servers
Sorry about no photos but my linux box crapped out last week and have no way to upload the photos on a pc as I have no windows drivers for it. I'm actually typing this from my PS3.
Anyways, I went and looked at the current prices of the parts I need and the prices of complete servers and I can see a pattern. I can get a complete server but the shipping will tear my bank account a new one and if I do just get replacement parts for these servers it will be a little cheaper but take longer for everything to get up and running.Find Nedry!

Re: Two new servers
Bit of a good update.
While I never found out what happened to the PSU and the PSU backplane on the powerwdge I did however manage to locate the PSU backplane and one of the hotswap PSUs for the HP server (the other unfortunately was gutted for parts) as well as locate a 64-bit PCI RAID card (pulled out of a dumpster in downtown Vancouver :/ )and the missing drive cage which came loaded with six 18.1GB 15K rpm SCA drives. The majority of the inside of the system was stripped by a friends friend and now that he knows where teh server went he's willing to offer me back what parts he pulled from the system. I still have to get from him the six hot swap fans and he might also have the two missing Xeon processors as well as the two VRM modules.
The only thing that is bugging me now is that the system in its current condition seems to be stuck in some sort of POST loop however I assume that once the processors, ram and the VRMs are back in the system that will clear itself up.
Sorry I still don't have pictures however it appears that Ubunti 8.10 no longer lets Gtkam download photos from my camera.Find Nedry!

Re: Two new servers
The Proliant ML370 does The Poweredge takes regular Slot 1 processors.
Also, here are some photographs.
Please note the processor sockets in the last picture.
For starters this is a Xeon server and since Xeon processors never came in a Socket 370 package (at least I have never see one that did) those sockets should not be there. The second thing are those two white connectors to the left of the sockets that run horizontal. They look to somehow relate to those sockets as not only are they in line with the ZIF 370 sockets but all of the above lines up with a set of fans on the very back of the case.Find Nedry!

Re: Two new servers
I don't see any Xeon sockets only VRM slots and socket 370.
Proliant ML370 is a series that's been around forever.
G1, G2, G3, and on 'n' on. G=Generation.
Looks like you have an older socket 370 version and someone slapped the cover off a newer "G" on it - and so the sticker doesn't match the board.

Also board says Compaq and I can see a "2000",,, presumably a year.
HP didn't acquire Compaq until like 2003.Mann-Made Global Warming.

Re: Two new servers
Wasn't able to find a part number but a quick google search finds that the G2 and G3 versions of the server have the exact same board layout (even the connectors are the same) so it looks like that while this is a G3 system someone swapped the original system board for an older G2 board which does indeed only use up to 1.4Ghz PIII processors.
Luckily I can however upgrade back to the Xeon version for only $20 + shipping so I can switch back to it if I want to and then hassle over looking for the Xeon processors and their VRMs.Find Nedry!

Cheers, Wizard
I would just drop in two Tualatins and call it a day however I have since sold off all my surplus Tualatin core PIII's and would have to find more on top of the two VRMs.
The only real reason I'm eying the Xeon board is because my connection in Vancouver gets these servers in to be recycled from time to time and if I ask him, he can manage to supply me any parts like the Xeon processors (and their VRMs) and the hot swap fans for the cost of a Pepsi or two.Find Nedry!

Re: Two new servers
Stupid edit button....
I just realized that compared to the PIII board, the Xeon takes EEC DDR (PC2100) ram and to my luck I have 1GB of the stuff lying around from an auction where the seller forgot to mention it was EEC memory.Find Nedry!

It's not HP it's Compaq.
HP didn't acquire Compaq until like early 2003.
