    Another classic combo revived! Abit BP6

    I've begun the ground work for yet another classic retrobox, the legendary Abit BP6! I bought this off ebay, seller claiming there was a pair of 300A's in it....well, they turned out to be 366's... I didn't discover this until I completely recapped the board, so sending it back for a refund is out... I'll either get a partial refund and leave positive feedback, or get nothing back, and he'll get a ripe one... I do happen to have a pair of 300A's from another deal though, so the project moves forward, but leaves another build in the lurch... I didn't pay much for this, so I'm not going to get too excited....but I really wanted the second set of 300A's, as they're very hard to find in a PPGA370 package, most were slot-1. It came with 768mb RAM (most supported by the board) a pair of Thermaltake 'golden orb' coolers, a NIC, and a SB Live sound card.

    Anyway, fully recapped, including all the small ones!!





    Thats all for today...after taking these pics, I hotwashed & air blasted the board after testing it...so I'll let sit overnight and get it set in a case tomorrow.

    Those aren't the first golden orb cooler's you've received ...


    Looks nice. Better than my busted BP6 which I should send somebody, for parts if nothing else. By busted I mean broken RAM latches and the like. Damaged in storage, boy was I pissed.

      LOL...yea, I forgot about that one. That AT BX board you gave me had a golden orb on it. I'll take that injured BP6 off your hands. I may try running those 366's up to 550....a quick search revealed that its known to be successful with no voltage increases.

        When I'm in lafayette this weekend I'll nab it then. I was going to send it to KC but over the past 7 years or so I blanked on it. Not sure what CPUs are in it but they have stock intel coolers.

          Awesome, I appreciate it!

          I tested the 366 processors @ 550 this morning. With some AS5 + golden orbs, it seems solid at 550MHz.....so maybe I got a little bonus!

            yea nice. sumtimes the higher speed binned chips overclock more as well. so instead of 300a->450, u got an added boost of 366->550. so u still got your 50% overclock and more! *worships topcat's 1337 overclocking skillz!*

            luv that boardful of rubycons too! my fav cap brand! this will be my rubycon cap pr0n of the day!

              Runs flawlessly stable @ 550/100, no vcore increase. Looks like the booboo was to my advantage!!

              2x Celeron 366 @ 550/100, 2v vcore
              ATI Radeon 7200 32mb GPU
              Diamond Monster Sounds MX300 < -- yea baby!
              Coolermaster 300W PSU
              20gb WD HDD on the HPT366 controller (SLOOOOWWWW)

                  BTW, it's not recapped and badly bloated. That's how it was given to me 7 years ago, and the project never materialized before the storage problem happened. Tossed in a pile of dead boards like a junky soyo...

                    I'll take it. I have a pair of 300A's for it, since these 366's are perfectly stable @ 550....

                    As for this build...well, I forgot just how slow IDE HDD's were back in the day....so it got a SCSI revamping. Night and day difference. Running a pair of U2 9.1GB on an adaptec AAA-131U2 RAID controller in a stripe. Yea, MUCH better!

                      Hah, I had the same chips on the same board, also overclocked to 550 in 2000!

                      Seemed quite slow compared with my later Athlon XP 1500+ system though, I guess SMP has been optimised quite a lot since then!

                      Cool retro system, brings back memories.

                      Sold mine and bought a Peugeot 205 GTI.

                        Just a little bumping of an old thread about this rough board.... Since it was gifted (and a classic), it was most certainly worthy of some effort....and I had a little spare time to work on it. Recapped and installed in an old beige case I found on ebay that cost basically the shipping....it had some old Zotac P3-era board in it.

                        The Case:


                        Anyway, some classic 300a goodness (these are the 300a's mentioned earlier in this thread)....running flawless @ 450/100.



                        Authentic Ratdude board, busted memory slot latches....it doesn't affect anything, all 3 slots are functional.


                        Pretty Rubies!


                        A classic on a classic!!


                        Firefox 12.

                        Overall specs:
                        Abit BP6 (obviously)
                        2x 300A's @ 450/100
                        768mb RAM
                        TNT2 32mb GPU
                        AWE64 audio
                        Adaptec 2100s u160 scsi controller
                        18.2gb 15k RPM U160 HDD

                        I have a 3rd BP6 I bought off ebay about a year ago for $25.00 shipped. I recapped it and got it working....but I haven't built a system with it yet. It only took me about 2 years to do this one.

                                Ok...another cheap BP6.....

                                This board would not POST with 2 CPU's before recapping. CPU fan header # 2 was dead. It had the first release BIOS on it (LP)....so yea, it needs a little love.

                                Since this is BP6 # 4, I figured I'd have a little fun with it.... To start with, full polymod...EVERY lytic replaced with polymer, including the small ones. I replaced the 1000uF 10v with 470uF 16v, and the 1500uF 6.3v were replaced with 820uF 6.3v, and the 100uF 16v were replaced with the same value. I also replaced the 2x fan controller transistors for header # 2 (Q4 & Q5), tiny surface mount bastards....they weren't fun....but I got it. Next was flashing the BIOS with my super duper modded version. I then cleaned it in the sink, dried it out, and tested it.....and that's where it's at for now...









                                More to come... repurposing some random heatsinks I scavenged off junk boards for FET's and other things....

                                  OS test.....the ever-so awesome win2k. I wasn't about to try XP on a pair of 433's....I have to find some more 300A's or 366's for some overclocking goodness. These are for testing purposes obviously. This post created from the most awesome polymodded BP6!

                                    That poly BP6 is marvelous.

                                    Which reminds me I should get around doing the same to my Jetway J-7BXAN.

                                    By the way, here's a very nostagic bit that I got the Jetway to show up (it has a non-ACPI bios). By the way, I took the pic from a VHS tape I occasionally use.

                                      Thanks....and yes, the BP6 is an old BX chipset....ACPI was primitive in those days, I get the 'safe to shut down' screen. The NT4 version is better though.

                                        yikes didnt realise stuff that old could be polymodded safely, considering it has only a single power phase per cpu. looks like hardware back in those days were tough ol' boats! cant say the same for current "modern" hardware which break waaay too easily. its like having a computer made out of thin glass or joss paper!
