Got it an emachines with a bad Bestec power supply. No big surprise there. Caps in the supply were good, but couldn't get any breath of life out of it. Hooked up my bench test supply, and as soon as I plug it in to power, the machine turns on and has no video. If I hold the power button, it will POST, and let me in the BIOS, but still fails to boot.
Took the board out of the case, same results. Replaced CPU and RAM with known good spares, same results. Cleared CMOS, pulled battery, let sit over night.... all with the same results. Sounds to me like something in the board is shorted. You can never get it to turn off. When you push the power button to try to turn it off, the screen goes black but the machine continues to run. Sometimes it'll just scramble the video on the screen, too. Did the bad PSU fry the chipset?
I'm going to try one more PSU before I officially call it a dead PC. It's not under any kind of warranty, as it's a socket A Athlon based PC.
