    Samsung 173p kickass 17" TFT

Just got one of these, you have to see one if you are in the market for a TFT, it has this chrome detail around the base and the silver plastic of the screen fascia. I have never seen a piece of computer equipment looking so good. designed by FA Porsche.

Toucb sensitive power on with a blue led. very very good reproduction of colours in photographs. I am no longer a CRT fanatic. 1280x1024 native resolution gets a bit getting used to but after a day I am ok with it.

It has a PVA matrix panel which gives better colour reproduction and better viewing angles (like 178 degrees) than the TN+ used on many tft monitors. You lose the speed though because it is 25ms rather than the 12-16ms seen on the Samsung 172x which uses the TN+. But i did not see a problem in DVDs or gaming. I am really stoked about this product.

If you are holding on to your CRT you have to see it next to your CRT, it will make your CRT look dull. The only problem is no buttons on this unit. It is all windows software. I did not find problems with this either it is just a matter of changing your method to accommodate. Easier to click than reach for the buttons.

i think i have to work harder because now i want two. my CRT next to it connected to another comp just looks like shit.

heh, yes i think they should release linux drivers, it is dissapointing. i am booting also with linux sometimes but i set the config of the panel in windows.

i have found out the panel is not designed by porsche only the older p series were. the touch sensitive power switch is actually heat sensitive.

you have to see this panel though it is something else.

My next monitor will definately be an LCD. After staring at my laptop screen, my 24" trinitron looks fuzzy.

I've got my eye on this one...

          or maybe this one

          http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16824255001

I'd really like to get a Samsung though, I know they are reliable as hell. I've seen the 15" panels in some games where I work put up with extreme temperature and never fail. Only problem is I need at least a 24" monitor... I can't go down in size, as blind as I am.

Though I have to say I'll be sticking to CRT for front projection until the black levels improve on the digitals. That and the price has to come down. I paid $650 for my old CRT projector, and I'm using it on a 122" 16x9 screen with good results.

i agree with the eyesight thing. i wanna bigger monitor but i will still go for PVA panel LCD cos i love the realistic colors. TN+ is always so disappointing.

I've had one of these for a while. I don't recall why I picked this one, most likely because of the good reviews. I really wanted a 19", but the price was too high. I see that the prices have come down significantly since then.

I use it in my kitchen. I have a media PC on top of my fridge, and the monitor on the counter. I watch HDTV with it, it looks great!

The prices have come down so much, that I recently purchased a larger one. I got a
SyncMaster 244T 24" LCD . Originally I wanted it to replace the 17", but it is too tall and I couldn't open my kitchen cupboards!

I am using it on my MythTV setup. That has two HDTV cards in it. I am using SuSE 10.1 and a nVidia 6600GT card. I have used both SyncMasters on that box. When you run the monitor setup, you can insert the CD that came with it, and it adds it to the list of supported monitors.

That is another one that I was looking at, though the 28" Viewsonic is the same price. I wonder how the picture compares?

Does that monitor sit up really high? It looks like the pedestal is really tall. I already have a switch box under my monitor, so if I had that Samsung, I'd need to look up at the screen

The bottom of the 244T screen is 6 1/4" from the base. The top of it is 20 3/4" from the base.

After I got it, I recall seeing a newer model 24" Samsung LCD, at about half the price. It didn't have all of the inputs that the 244T has.

There is the Samsung 245BW LCD .
It's not halve the price of the 244T, but it is about $200 (USA) less.

Looks like it sacrifices a bit of brightness over the more expensive one, but I love how it looks
